Tórshavn Municipality
Tórshavn Municipality (Tórshavnar kommuna) is the municipality of the Faroese capital Tórshavn and its surroundings. The municipality covers the southern half of Streymoy island and adjacent minor islands and has an area of 173 km2. It became an independent municipality in 1866 and is the largest in the Faroes. The municipality has a population of about 23,071 (August 2022) or 40.5% of the total population of the islands. Streymoy
Streymoy ( da, Strømø) is the largest and most populated island of the Faroe Islands. The capital, Tórshavn, is located on its southeast coast. The name means "island of currents". It also refers to the largest region of the country that also includes the islands of Hestur, Koltur and Nólsoy. Geography The island is oblong in shape and stretches roughly in northwest–southeast direction with a length of and a width of around . There are two deeply-indented fjords in the southeast: Kollafjørður and Kaldbaksfjørður. The island is mountainous (average height is 337 meter ), especially in the northwest, with the highest peak being Kopsenni (). That area is dominated by over cliffs. The area is known as Vestmannabjørgini, which means Cliffs of Vestmanna. Signabøur
Signabøur ( da, Signebø) is a village on the east coast of the Faroese island Streymoy in Tórshavn Municipality. The 2015 population was 133. Its postal code is FO 416. Whaling station In 1903 Hans Albert Grøn built the whaling station Verdande in Signabø. Verdande was originally an old company which had tried for whales in Finnmark, Norway. Grøn had planned for some time to start the company up for whaling in Shetland, but for some reason the company ended at Signabø in Kollafirði. For whaling, the company overtook two whaling boats, Nordkap and Nordkyn from Grøn's company in the Finnmark, and were renamed Dimon and Kolter. The boats Dimon (1903-1912), Kolter (1903-1912), Hvalen (1908-1911) and Skjold (1909) were attached to the station. One of the boats was rammed by a wounded whale in 1907 and nearly sank, but it was managed to tow it back to Signabø for repairs. The station closed down in 1912. Heðin Mortensen
Heðin Mortensen (born April 7, 1946) is a Faroese politician member of the Social Democratic Party. He is the current mayor of the Municipality of Tórshavn since 1 January 2021. He was also mayor from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2016. Mortensen was born in Trongisvágur. He worked as a mechanic from 1961 to 1978, when he became an insurance agent for The Faroe Insurance Company ( fo, Tryggingarfelagið Føroyar). He headed the Tórshavn Rowing Club from 1973 to 1979, the Tórshavn Athletics Association ( fo, Tórshavnar Ítróttarráð) from 1975 to 1978, and the Faroese Athletics Association ( fo, Ítróttasamband Føroya) from 1980 to 2000. He was also the chair of the Tórshavn Theater Society from 1996 to 2003. He has been a supervisory board member of the power company SEV since 1973 and was its director from 1993 to 1997. Progress (Faroe Islands)
Progress ( fo, Framsókn) is a liberal, pro- Faroese independence political party on the Faroe Islands. History Founded on 9 March 2011 by Poul Michelsen and others as a breakaway from the People's Party, the party won two seats in the October 2011 election to the 33-seat Løgting. Its two MPs in this first election were Poul Michelsen and Janus Rein. However, almost a year after the election, on 6 October 2012, Rein left the party and became an independent member of the Faroese Parliament. He didn't give any clear reason to why he left the party, just that there were some disagreements between him and Poul Michelsen. On the following day, the Faroese website aktuelt.fo, which was run by the newspaper Sosialurin at that time, brought an article saying that the two MPs disagreed on whether Rein should be a candidate for the elections for the city council of Tórshavn or not. Republic (Faroe Islands)
Republic ( fo, Tjóðveldi), formerly known as the Republican Party ( fo, Tjóðveldisflokkurin) is a left-wing political party on the Faroe Islands committed to Faroese independence. History The party was founded in 1948 as a reaction to the islands failing to gain independence despite the outcome of the 1946 independence referendum, after which independence was subsequently declared but annulled by the Danish King. In 1998, Høgni Hoydal succeeded Heini O. Heinesen as party leader. During the 20 January 2004 legislative elections, the party won 21.7% of the popular vote and 8 out of 33 seats. However, after the passing of an amendment adding the term "sexual orientation" to paragraph 266b of the Anti-Discrimination Act, MP Karsten Hansen announced that he was leaving the party owing to a difference in opinion. The Social Democratic Party ( fo, Javnaðarflokkurin, lit=Equality Party, JF) is a social-democratic political party on the Faroe Islands, led by Aksel V. Johannesen. History The Social Democratic Party was founded on 25 September 1925 by members of Faroese trade unions. Its youth organization '' Sosialistiskt Ungmannafelag'' (Socialist Youth) was founded in 1965. The Faroese People's Party – Radical Self-Government ( fo, Hin føroyski fólkaflokkurin – radikalt sjálvstýri) is a pro- Faroese independence conservative and conservative-liberal political party on the Faroe Islands led by Beinir Johannesen. One of the four major parties, it has had eight seats in the Løgting since the 2019 election, making it the joint-largest party, but it has neither of the Faroes' seats in the Folketing. Syðradalur
Syðradalur (, is a village on the island of Kalsoy, one of the Faroe Islands. Syðradalur is the southernmost village on the island, and is in Húsar Municipality. On 1 January 2009, Syðradalur had nine inhabitants, down from 12 in 1985. Bjørn Kalsø comes from Syðradalur. History Syðradalur is a settlement village ( fo, niðursetubygd) founded at the beginning of the 19th century by inhabitants of the village of Blankskáli on the south-west of the island. Syðradalur was previously inhabited in the 17th century, but the reason it was abandoned is unknown. In 1855, a boat from the village was sunk on a large boulder. In 1963, another boat from the village, this time carrying three men, was also sunk. A tunnel system was built in 1985 linking Syðradalur with the other villages on the island.
