Tyska Brinken
Tyska Brinken ( sv, The German Slope) is a street in Gamla stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden. Extending Kindstugatan past the German Church down to the square Mälartorget, it is crossed by Skomakargatan, Prästgatan, Västerlånggatan, Stora Nygatan, Lilla Nygatan, and Munkbrogatan, while forming a parallel street to Schönfeldts Gränd and Lejonstedts Gränd. History Mentioned as ''Vattubrinken'' ("Water Slope") and ''Skomakarbrinken'' (Shoemaker's Slope") in the 15th and 16th centuries, the street appears as ''Tyske Kyrkebrinken'' in 1612, and finally as ''Tyska brinken'' in 1679, and ''Tyska Brinken'' in 1880. The street name refers to the proximity of the German Church, and the German parish. The German influence in Stockholm was considerable during the Middle Ages - half of both the population and the members of the City Council were German; the Hanseatic League dominated trade; the wealthiest burghers were Germans; and the German language and cu ...

Tyska Brunnsplan
Tyska Brunnsplan (Swedish: "German Well Square") is a small, triangular public square in Gamla stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden. It is located in the junction between the streets Svartmangatan and Själagårdsgatan, the former leading to Stortorget and the latter to Brända Tomten. As several local names knows to tell (e.g. Tyska Stallplan and Tyska Skolgränd) the square is named after the vicinity to the German Church and the German community which once occupied the neighbourhood. Origin of the name The square appears as ''Tyske Brunnen'' ("German Well") and ''Stadsens brunn vid Gillestugan'' ("the city's well by the guild homestead") in 1649; as ''Tyska Brunn'' in both 1728 and 1820; and as ''Tyska Brunsplan'' in 1863. History Until the early 18th century, the corner where the two streets meet was the location for a well of considerable proportions. During the later part of the century, the city's fire company established so called 'turning spaces' (spac ...

Tyska Skolgränd
Tyska Skolgränd ( sv, German School Alley) is an alley in Gamla stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden, stretching from Svartmangatan to Baggensgatan, and crossed by Själagårdsgatan. The present name of the street, first appeared as ''Tyska Scholæ Gatan'' on a map from the early 18th century. It is apparently derived from the German school in the late 16th century housed on number 8, Själagårdsgatan. The lot was thereafter bought by the German parish who had a first school building built in 1626, and a new completed in 1670. The building was subsequently enlarged and rebuilt on several occasions, the present buildings mostly date from 1887. The building, as it seem, was the one in general used by itinerant theatre groups in Stockholm during the 17th century. The German school was discontinued after more than 300 years, but a new German school, still in operation, was inaugurated on Östermalm in 1941. The part of the alley east of Själagårdsgatan appears under d ...

Tyska Stallplan
Tyska Stallplan (Swedish language, Swedish: "German Stable Square" or literally "Plane") is a street in Gamla stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden. Stretching south from Svartmangatan to Prästgatan, it is connected to Baggensgatan and Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, while forming a (somewhat) parallel street to Österlånggatan and Tyska Brinken. By the street are the public library and the major school (''Storkyrkoskolan'', "School of the Great Church" (e.g. Storkyrkan)) of the told town. While named a square, it undoubtedly remains a matter of taste and definition whether this elongated open space should be regarded as a street. History On either side of the street was the Blackfriars monastery from the 1330s to the Protestant Reformation, Reformation (1520-1530). Archaeological excavations in the area have unveiled the remains of the monastery's wall under the present streets. In the southern end of Tyska Stallplan several such traces have been discovered, and in Prästga ...
