Typoart
VEB Typoart was the only type foundry of East Germany. It was a state-owned enterprise ("Volkseigener Betrieb") located in Dresden. The foundry's most influential art directors were Herbert Thannhäuser (until 1963) and Albert Kapr (until 1987). History VEB Typoart was created by the government of the German Democratic Republic in 1948 through a merger of several nationalised type foundries, including Schelter & Giesecke (1945), Schriftguss AG (1951), Ludwig Wagner AG (1961), and Norddeutsche Schriftgießerei (1961). Originally called Schriftguß KG Dresden (1945) and VEB Schriftguß Dresden (1958), the enterprise was renamed to VEB Typoart in 1951. From 1970, it was subordinated to '' Zentrag'', a state enterprise coordinating all GDR printing activity. Schriftguss AG
Schriftguss AG was a type foundry in Germany founded in 1892 under the name ''Brüder Butter'' (“Butter Brothers”) by purchasing the type casting firm of Otto Ludwig Bechert that had been founded in 1889. It was later incorporated in 1922 as ''Schriftguss A.-G. vorm. rev.Brüder Butter.'' Their types were known for “vigour, liveliness and freshness.” Though some faces were done in house, the foundry mainly worked with outside “Schriftkünstler” (freelance lettering artists / type designers), more than was typical at the time. A unique product of the foundry were modular systems of “Plakattype” to compose shapes and letterforms for display and jobbing applications, for instance ''Dekora,'' or Albert Auspurg’s 1931 ''Ne-Po (negative–positive),'' and finally ''Super-Plakattype'' in 1949. Arno Drescher
Arnold Drescher was trained as a teacher in Auerbach in 1896 and later studied at Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1905 to 1907 where he became a specialised instructor for art teachers, becoming a professor in 1920. As well as working freelance as a designer, he was also employed by the Staatliche Akademie für graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe (academy for graphic art and the book trades). Between 1940 and 1945, he was the Academy's director. As well as being a typographer, he was a prolific painter and illustrator, designing posters for the East German government. In 1960 he retired to Braunschweig where he later died. Volkseigener Betrieb
The Publicly Owned Enterprise (german: Volkseigener Betrieb; abbreviated VEB) was the main legal form of industrial enterprise in East Germany. They were all publicly owned and were formed after Nationalisation#Germany, mass nationalisation between 1945 and the early 1960s, and the handing back in 1954 of some 33 enterprises previously taken by the Soviet Union as War reparations, reparations. The managing director of a VEB was called a plant or works manager (German: ''Werkleiter'', ''Werkdirektor'' or ''Betriebsdirektor''). Copperplate Gothic
Copperplate Gothic is a typeface designed by Frederic W. Goudy and released by American Type Founders (ATF) in 1901. While termed a "''Gothic''" (another term for sans-serif), the face has small glyphic serifs that act to emphasize the blunt terminus of vertical and horizontal strokes. The typeface shows an unusual combination of influences; the glyphs are reminiscent of stone carving or lettering on copperplate engravings, the wide horizontal axis is typical of Victorian display types, yet the result is far cleaner and leaves a crisp impression in letterpress or offset printing. Goudy designed Copperplate Gothic in capitals only, since the design was intended to be used for headings and key words rather than for body text. Compugraphic Corporation, commonly called cg, was an American producer of typesetting systems and phototypesetting equipment, based in Wilmington, Massachusetts, just a few miles from where it was founded. This company is distinct from Compugraphics, a British company founded 1967 in Aldershot, UK that specializes in the production of photomasks used in the production of integrated circuits. In 1987, it was acquired by European competitor Agfa-Gevaert, and its products and processes merged into those of Agfa. By 1988, the merger was complete and the Compugraphic brand was removed from the market. Along with AM/Varityper and Mergenthaler, Compugraphic was at the vanguard of what was then considered to be a revolution in the graphic arts: "cold type." Garamond
Garamond is a group of many serif typefaces, named for sixteenth-century Parisian engraver Claude Garamond, generally spelled as Garamont in his lifetime. Garamond-style typefaces are popular and particularly often used for book printing and body text. Garamond's types followed the model of an influential typeface cut for Venetian printer Aldus Manutius by his punchcutter Francesco Griffo in 1495, and are in what is now called the old-style of serif letter design, letters with a relatively organic structure resembling handwriting with a pen, but with a slightly more structured, upright design. Georg Belwe (12 August 1878 – 1954) was a German type designer, typographer, graphic artist and teacher. Personal information Belwe was born on 8 December 1878 in Berlin, Germany. He studied and later taught at the teaching institute of Königliches Kunstgewerbemuseum in his native Berlin.
