Typhoon Man-yi (other)
The name Man-yi has been used to name four tropical cyclones in the western north Pacific Ocean. High Island Reservoir
The High Island Reservoir, located in the far south eastern part of the Sai Kung Peninsula, was opened in 1978 helping to alleviate water scarcity, water shortage problems in Hong Kong. Its water capacity is approximately 273 million cubic metres. The area it occupies was originally the Kwun Mun Channel (), which separated High Island, Hong Kong, High Island from the Sai Kung Peninsula. Sai Kung Peninsula
The Sai Kung Peninsula () is a peninsula in the easternmost part of the New Territories in Hong Kong. Its name comes from Sai Kung Town in the central southern area of the peninsula. The southern part of the peninsula is administrated by Sai Kung District, the north by Tai Po District and the northwest by Sha Tin District. Description The vast land and sea area of the peninsula remains untouched by urbanisation, and it is mostly covered by country parks. The marine ecosystem in Hoi Ha Wan is protected by law. Sai Kung is also a popular place for hiking. The starting point for the MacLehose Trail is at Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung. New Territories
The New Territories is one of the three main regions of Hong Kong, alongside Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula. It makes up 86.2% of Hong Kong's territory, and contains around half of the population of Hong Kong. Historically, it is the region described in the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory. High Island, Hong Kong
High Island or Leung Shuen Wan Chau () is a former island located in the southeast of Sai Kung Peninsula in Hong Kong. It historically had an area of 8.511 km² and was the 4th largest island of Hong Kong in 1960. The island is now connected to the peninsula by two dams crossing the former Kwun Mun Channel (), thereby forming the High Island Reservoir. The dams were constructed between 1969 and 1979. The former island is under the jurisdiction of the Sai Kung District. Etymology Geologically, high islands are islands of volcanic origin. The term can be used to distinguish such islands from low islands, which are formed from sedimentation or the uplifting of coral reefs (which have often formed on sunken volcanos). Typhoon Man-yi (2001)
The 2001 Pacific typhoon season was the fourth and final consecutive year with below-average activity, making it the lowest four-year period of activity since 1976–1979, due to the presence of a strong La Niña that had persisted from 1998–2001. The season produced twenty-five named storms, sixteen typhoons and three super typhoons. It ran year-round in 2001, with most tropical cyclones in the northwestern Pacific Ocean tending between May and November. However the first named storm, Cimaron, did not develop until May 9. Taiwan suffered the most destruction from typhoons this year, with Typhoons Toraji, Nari, and Lekima being responsible for nearly 300 deaths in that island alone, making it one of the deadliest typhoon seasons in recorded history in that island. In November, Typhoon Lingling impacted the Philippines, killing 171 people, making it one of the deadliest Philippine storms this century.
