Typecast (horse)
Typecast (foaled April 10, 1966) was an American Champion Thoroughbred racehorse noted for her ability to win races at both short and very long distances. Background Bred by Nuckols Bros. of Midway, Kentucky, she was out of the mare Journalette and sired by Prince John, a son of the very important sire Princequillo. Purchased and raced by Westerly Stud Farms of Santa Ynez, California, Typecast was conditioned for racing by Tommy Doyle. Racing career A late developer, Typecast began to show contending form in 1971 at age five when she ran second in both the Beverly Hills and Ramona Handicaps and won the Las Palmas Handicap. She was six years old when she had her Champion season in which she won at both short and very long distances. In 1972, she won important races at her home base in California including the Gamely, Milady and Santa Monica Handicaps, all run at distances between seven and eight and a half furlongs. Prince John (horse)
Prince John (April 6, 1953 – January 26, 1979) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse called "one of the greatest broodmare sires of all time" by Bloodhorse magazine. Bred in Kentucky, he was sired by Princequillo, a two-time leading sire in North America and a nine-time leading broodmare sire. He was out of the mare Not Afraid, a daughter of 1943 U.S. Triple Crown winner and Hall of Fame inductee Count Fleet. Prince John was a full brother to Brave Lad. On behalf of Max Gluck, a New York clothing retailer and owner of Elmendorf Farm, trainer Walter Kelley bought Prince John for $14,300 at the 1954 Keeneland Summer Sale from breeder Mrs. Fannie Hertz. The Eclipse Award is an American Thoroughbred horse racing award named after the 18th-century British racehorse and sire, Eclipse. An Eclipse Award Trophy is presented to the winner in each division that is made by a few small selected American foundries with expertise in studio bronze casting. It is then mounted on the hand-crafted native Kentucky walnut base to comprise the Eclipse Award on which a brass plate recites the award winner. Vanity Handicap
The Beholder Mile Stakes is a Grade I American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares aged three and up. It is run over a distance of one mile on the dirt each year in March at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. History The event was inaugurated in 1940 as the Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California over the current distance of one mile. In 1968 Gamely won carrying a record weight for a winner of 131 pounds in the race. Her owner William Haggin Perry had the three placegetters in the race which carried a record high stakes amount for the fillies and mares of $79,650. Convenience (foaled May 29, 1968 in Florida) was a Thoroughbred racing mare. She was sired by Fleet Nasrullah, a son of Nasrullah, and her dam was Moment of Truth. Bred by Caper Hill Farm, Inc. and raced by Glen Hill Farm, she was trained by Willard Proctor. During her racing career, Convenience won fifteen of thirty-five starts and retired with earnings of $648,933. The Santa Margarita Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in early April at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California for fillies and mares age four and older, it is contested on dirt over a distance of one and one-eighths miles. A Grade I event for most of its history, in 2019 it was downgraded to Grade II. Inaugurated in 1935, the race was open to all horses age three and older until 1938 when it was restricted to fillies and mares. Turkish Trousers (foaled 1968) was an American Champion Thoroughbred racehorse bred and raced by California businessman, Howard B. Keck. Racing career Ridden by future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Bill Shoemaker, two-year-old Turkish Trousers made her debut a winning one on December 30, 1970 at Santa Anita Park. The following year she was the dominant filly of her age group and after winning eight important stakes, was voted the 1971 Eclipse Award for American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly. American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly
The American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly is an American Thoroughbred horse racing honor awarded annually to a female horse in Thoroughbred flat racing. It became part of the Eclipse Awards program in 1971. The award originated in 1936 when both the ''Daily Racing Form'' (DRF) and Turf and Sports Digest (TSD) magazine began naming an annual champion. Starting in 1950, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) began naming its own champion. The following list provides the name of the horses chosen by these organizations. There were several disagreements, with more than one champion being recognized on five occasions. The Red Carpet Handicap (known until 2013 as the Beverly Hills Handicap) is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually (as of 2014) during Del Mar racetrack's fall meet which has been created to accommodate the overflow of established races from closing of Hollywood Park.
