''Twelfth Night'' (russian: Двенадцатая ночь, transliteration ''Dvenadtsataya noch'') is a 1955 Soviet comedy film by Lenfilm based on Shakespeare's play ''Twelfth Night, or What You Will''. The script was written by Yan Frid. The film was released in the Soviet Union on 21 November 1955, and in the United States on 3 March 1956. Yan Frid
Yan Borisovich Frid (russian: Ян Борисович Фрид; 1908–2003) was a Soviet screenwriter and film director. Life and career Yan Borisovich Frid was born on May 31 in 1908 in Krasnoyarsk. In 1932 he graduated from the directing department of the Leningrad Theatrical Institute (workshop of Vladimir Solovyov), and in 1938, from the VGIK, where his mentor was Sergei Eisenstein. Since 1938, the director started working at Lenfilm, where he made his debut with a short film based on Anton Chekhov's short story "Surgery." Then he made the children's adventure film "Patriot". Starting from October 1941 he participated in the Great Patriotic War. Between January 1944 and May 1945 he was head of the Army House of the Red Army of the 15th Air Army. He fought on the Leningrad and 2nd Baltic fronts. Participated in the defense and lifting of the blockade of Leningrad, the liberation of the Baltic states. He was a People's Artist of the RSFSR (1952) and the winner of two Stalin Prize of the second degree (1951, 1952). Biography Sergei Lukyanov was born on 14 (27) September 1910 in the village of Nizhnee (now Donetsk Oblast), in a miner's family. Aleksandr Pavlovich Antonov (russian: Александр Павлович Антонов; 13 February 1898, in Moscow – 26 November 1962) was a Soviet film actor who had a lengthy career, stretching from the silent era to the 1950s. Antonov was named Merited Artist of the Russian Federation in 1950. Antonov was a member of the Moscow Proletarian Culture Theater between the years 1920–1924 when he met Sergei Eisenshtein, who cast him in his directorial debut short film Glumov's Diary (1923) and in his first full-length feature ''Strike'' (1924). Eisenshtein then gave Antonov the part of Bolshevik leader Grigory Vakulinchuk in ''The Battleship Potemkin'' (1925), which remains his best known role.
