Turner (surname)
Turner is a common surname originating from Normandy, France, arriving in England after the Norman conquest with the earliest known records dated in the 12th century. It is the 28th-most common surname in the United Kingdom. Most often it derives from an occupational name applied to a maker of small objects out of wood, metal or bone, by turning on a lathe (from Old French ''tornier'', "lathe", ultimately from Latin). In this sense it is analogous to the German surnames Drexel (name), Drexel, Drechsler, Dressler, and Dreyer, Polish wikt:Tokarz, Tokarz, Finnish wikt:sorvari, Sorvari, Russian :ru:Токарь (значения), Токарь (''Tokarʼ'') and related to English surnames such as Potter (name), Potter and Crocker (name), Crocker. Other occasional origins include Old French ''tournoieur'', referring to someone either in charge of, or who participates in a tournament, and ''Turnhare'', referring to a fast runner (one who can outrun a hare). Early recordings of this sur ...

Turner Program Services
Turner Program Services was the former syndication arm of Turner Broadcasting. It served the same purpose as Turner Entertainment's distribution unit, with the exception that TPS was more involved in distributing television series rather than films. Founded in 1982, the company was originally responsible for syndicating Turner-produced programs (such as the syndicated game show ''Starcade'') as well as developing programming for TBS such as ''Night Tracks''. TPS expanded its distribution into other networks' series in the 1990s, syndicating series such as ''The Wonder Years'' (which is now owned by 20th Television since 2011). When Turner bought the rights to the Hanna-Barbera library of cartoons, TPS became their distributor to local stations. TPS was also responsible for handling distribution and sales for CNN Newsource. One of the more notable series TPS was responsible for developing was ''Captain Planet and the Planeteers'', which was a co-production with DiC Entertainment ...

Turner Entertainment Company is an American multimedia company founded by Ted Turner in 1986. Purchased by Time Warner in 1996 as part of its acquisition of Turner Broadcasting System (TBS), the company was largely responsible for overseeing the TBS library for worldwide distribution. In recent years, this role has largely been limited to being the copyright holder, as it has become an in-name-only subsidiary of Warner Bros., which currently administers their library. Background On March 25, 1986, Ted Turner and his Turner Broadcasting System purchased Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) from Kirk Kerkorian for $1.5 billion, and renamed it MGM Entertainment Company, Inc. However, due to concerns in the financial community over the debt-load of his companies, on August 26, 1986, he was forced to sell the MGM name, all of United Artists, and the Culver City-based lot back to Kerkorian for approximately $300 million after months of ownership. But in order to manage the vault, Turner kept th ...
