Turku Science Park
Turku Science Park is a community of businesses and educational establishments in the city of Turku, Finland. It focuses on development of the biotechnology and IT industries in southwestern Finland through cooperation of the different factors in the field. Its membership includes approximately 300 companies operating in Turku, including e.g. Nokia and Fujitsu. It also works in close partnership with Åbo Akademi University, University of Turku and Turku University of Applied Sciences. The Science Park is located to the east of the city centre, mainly in the district of Kupittaa. The universities and the TYKS central hospital, another important partner of the project, are situated in the I District of the city. Premises of the Science Park amount to a total of 210,000 m² in eleven buildings, and heavy construction work is currently taking place in Kupittaa to cater for the projects present in the area. Ã…bo Akademi University
Ã…bo Akademi University ( sv, Ã…bo Akademi , ) is the only exclusively Swedish language multi-faculty university in Finland (or anywhere outside Sweden). It is located mainly in Turku (Ã…bo is the Swedish name of the city) but has also activities in Vaasa. Ã…bo Akademi should not be confused with the Royal Academy of Ã…bo, which was founded in 1640, but moved to Helsinki after the Turku fire of 1827 and is today known as the University of Helsinki. Ã…bo Akademi was founded by private donations in 1918 as the third university in Finland, both to let Turku again become a university town and because it was felt that the Swedish language was threatened at the University of Helsinki. I District, Turku
The I District is the easternmost of the central districts of Turku, Finland. It is located on the east side of the river Aura, between ''Uudenmaankatu'' and the Helsinki motorway (Finnish national road 1). The main street Hämeenkatu divides the district in Sirkkala and Universities area, and continues as the national road 10 towards Hämeenlinna. The district hosts all three universities of the city, the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi, and the Turku School of Economics and Business Administration. The city's central hospital TYKS is also located in the district, as well as the Cathedral of Turku and the residence of the Archbishop of Finland. Turku University Hospital ( fi, Turun yliopistollinen keskussairaala, TYKS, sv, Ã…bo universitetscentralsjukhus, Ã…UCS) is a hospital in Turku, Finland. General information The hospital serves as the central hospital for southwestern Finland. It is located near the city centre of Turku and the university, and has branches in the nearby towns of Raisio and Paimio. The hospital unit in Paimio operates in a former tuberculosis sanatorium, the Paimio Sanatorium, designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Kupittaa ( sv, Kuppis) is a district in Turku, Finland. It is located on the eastern side of the city's centre, around the Kupittaa Park, the first landscaped park in a Finnish city. The district serves as a centre for recreation and business. Turku has recently planned a residential area for 750 residents on the premises of a former HKScan sausage factory. The area hosts, among other things, numerous sports facilities, such as the Veritas Stadion, a Finnish baseball stadium, a velodrome, a bowling alley, a skateboarding area and a BMX track, and the Kupittaa open-air swimming pools. The ice hockey arena in the district was demolished in 2005. A new one was inaugurated in November 2006. Most of the Turku Science Park business centre is located in Kupittaa.
