Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation
Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation (Turkish: Türkiye Elektrik İletim A. Ş., abbreviated TEİAŞ) is the transmission system operator for electricity in Turkey. It is a government-owned corporation. It is planned for a minority stake to be sold to the private sector before the end of 2022. History In 2006, investigations were begun by ENTSO-E, the European Network of Transmission System Operators, into the technical conditions for the interconnection of the national grid of Turkey to the continental European power system. A trial period of interconnection commenced on 18 September 2010, and after the signing of long term agreements, the interconnection with Europe became a permanent arrangement. There was a nationwide blackout in 2015. This list attempts to include all plants which generate coal power in Turkey including autoproducers. All coal-fired power stations which sent power to the grid in 2020 are listed below. In 2018 there were 300 MW of unlicensed thermal power stations (a licence is not required if no power is sent to the grid) but it is not known whether any of them were coal-fired. Hydroelectricity In Turkey
Hydroelectricity is a major source of electricity in Turkey, due to its mountainous landscape and many rivers. The country's main river basins are the Euphrates and Tigris. Over 700 hydropower plants have been built, and they make up about 30% of the country's electricity generating capacity. Annual generation varies greatly, and in rainy years lots of hydroelectric power can be generated. Government policies have generally supported building dams, but some are controversial in neighbouring countries, and some raise concerns about damage to the environment and wildlife. The most important power stations in Turkey are listed here. Turkey generates about 300 TWh of electricity per year. High Carbon Emissions Coal All operational coal-fired power stations over 50MW are listed below. 2015 Turkey Blackout
The 2015 Turkey blackout was a widespread power outage that occurred in almost all parts of Turkey in the morning of Tuesday, 31 March 2015. Due to line maintenance on the main East-West corridor, which connects hydropower rich Eastern Turkey with the population centers in Western Turkey, the remaining lines became overloaded after the Osmanca – Kursunlu line tripped, as the system was not in a n-1 secure state. The electric system in Turkey split in half at CET 09:36:11 and separated from the Central European (CE) synchronous zone, i.e. connecting lines to Greece and Bulgaria also tripped. ENTSO-E, the European Network of Transmission System Operators, represents 39 electricity transmission system operators (TSOs) from 35 countries across Europe, thus extending beyond EU borders. Electricity Sector In Turkey
Turkey uses more electricity per person than the global average, but less than the European average, with demand peaking in summer due to air conditioning. Most electricity is generated from coal, gas and hydropower, with hydroelectricity from the east transmitted to big cities in the west. Electricity prices are state-controlled, but wholesale prices are heavily influenced by the cost of imported gas. Each year, about 300 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity is used, which is almost a quarter of the total energy used in Turkey.
