Turasha River
The Turasha River is a major tributary of the Malewa River, which feeds Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley, Kenya, Great Rift Valley of Kenya. The Turasha rises to the east of Mount Kipipiri. As of 1994 there was a plan for impounding the river for rural water supply, which could threaten Lake Naivasha. It is dammed at an elevation of about to supply fresh water to the town of Nakuru. About of water are diverted to Nakuru daily. Of this, about two thirds goes to Nakuru Municipality and one third to Gilgil communities. Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in Kenya, outside the town of Naivasha in Nakuru County, which lies north west of Nairobi. It is part of the Great Rift Valley. The name derives from the local Maasai name ''Nai'posha'', meaning "rough water" because of the sudden storms which can arise. Location Lake Naivasha is at the highest elevation of the Kenyan Rift valley at in a complex geological combination of volcanic rocks and sedimentary deposits from a larger Pleistocene Era lake. Apart from transient streams, the lake is fed by the perennial Malewa and Gilgil rivers. There is no visible outlet, but since the lake water is relatively fresh it is assumed to have an underground outflow. Great Rift Valley, Kenya
The Great Rift Valley is part of an intra-continental ridge system that runs through Kenya from north to south. It is part of the Gregory Rift, the eastern branch of the East African Rift, which starts in Tanzania to the south and continues northward into Ethiopia. It was formed on the "Kenyan Dome" a geographical upwelling created by the interactions of three major tectonics: the Arabian, Nubian, and Somalian plates. In the past, it was seen as part of a "Great Rift Valley" that ran from Madagascar to Syria. Most of the valley falls within the former Rift Valley Province. The valley contains the Cherangani Hills and a chain of volcanoes, some of which are still active. The climate is mild, with temperatures usually below . Mount Kipipiri
Mount Kipipiri is an isolated volcano in the Wanjohi Valley, on the Kinangop Plateau near to the Aberdare Range. It is about northeast of Lake Naivasha, which is visible from the summit. Wildlife includes Colobus and Sykes monkeys, elephants and buffalo and abundant birdlife. The name of the mountain means "butterfly" in the Gikuyu language, a reference to its profile from a distance. The Mount Kipipiri Forest Reserve is part of the Aberdare National Park. In 2005 it was estimated that the forest reserve was home to about 13 elephants. Nakuru
Nakuru is a city in the Great Rift Valley, Kenya, Rift Valley region of Kenya. It is the capital of Nakuru County, and was formerly the capital of Rift Valley Province. As of 2019, Nakuru had an urban and rural population of 570,674 inhabitants, making it the largest urban center in the Rift Valley, with Eldoret in Uasin Gishu County following closely behind. Gilgil
Gilgil, Kenya, is a town in Nakuru County, Kenya. The town is located between Naivasha and Nakuru and along the Nairobi - Nakuru highway. It is to the west of the Gilgil River, which flows south to feed Lake Naivasha. Gilgil has a population of 18,805 according to the 1999 census. Gilgil is the centre of the Gilgil Division in Nakuru County. History During the 1920s - 1940s, some members of the Happy Valley set lived in Gilgil. From 1944 to 1948, it also contained a British internment camp for Irgun and Lehi members. The first soldiers that arrived in the town were advance parties of the South African Army preparing for the arrival of the 1st South African Infantry Brigade, which was training in the area by mid-1940.
