Tundra (1936 Film)
''Tundra'' is a 1936 drama film directed by Norman Dawn and featuring Merrill McCormick, Frank Baker and Earl Dwire. Originally the film was backed by Universal Pictures, but it was dropped when Carl Laemmle lost control of the studio. Production and distribution was then taken over by the independent Burroughs-Tarzan Pictures. Seven months of location shooting took place in Alaska. The film's sets were designed by the art director Charles Clague. Norman Dawn
Norman O. Dawn (25 May 1884 – 2 February 1975) was an early American film director. He made several improvements on the matte shot to apply it to motion picture, and was the first director to use rear projection in film production. Dawn's innovations in glass and matte shots Dawn's first film ''Missions of California'' made extensive use of the glass shot, in which certain parts of the intended image are painted on a piece of glass and placed in between the camera and the live action. Many of the buildings which Dawn was filming were at least partially destroyed; by painting sections of roof or walls, the impression was made that the buildings were in fact, still whole. The main difference between the glass shot and the matte shot is that with a glass shot, all filming is done with a single exposure of film. Carl Laemmle
Carl Laemmle (; born Karl Lämmle; January 17, 1867 – September 24, 1939) was a film producer and the co-founder and, until 1934, owner of Universal Pictures. He produced or worked on over 400 films. Regarded as one of the most important of the early film pioneers, Laemmle was born in what is now Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1884 and worked in Chicago for 20 years before he began buying nickelodeons, eventually expanding into a film distribution service, the Laemmle Film Service, then into production as Independent Moving Pictures Company (IMP), later renamed Universal Film Manufacturing Company, and later still renamed Universal Pictures Company. ''Arctic Fury'' is a 1949 American adventure film directed by Norman Dawn and Fred R. Feitshans Jr. and written by Charles F. Royal, Norton S. Parker, Robert Libott and Frank Burt. The film stars Alfred Delcambre, Eve Miller, Gloria Petroff, Dan Riss, Merrill McCormick and Fred Smith. The film was released on May 4, 1949, by RKO Radio Pictures. ''Arctic Fury'' is an updated version of the film ''Tundra'' (1936), which starred Alfred Del Cambre (billed as "Del Cambre"). ''Tundra'', like other films produced by the Edgar Rice Burroughs-Tarzan company, was filmed on location under primitive and sometimes treacherous conditions. RKO Radio Pictures Inc., commonly known as RKO Pictures or simply RKO, was an American film production and distribution company, one of the "Big Five" film studios of Hollywood's Golden Age. The business was formed after the Keith-Albee-Orpheum (KAO) theater chain and Joseph P. Kennedy's Film Booking Offices of America (FBO) studio were brought together under the control of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) in October 1928. RCA chief David Sarnoff engineered the merger to create a market for the company's sound-on-film technology, RCA Photophone, and in early 1929 production began under the RKO name (an abbreviation of Radio-Keith-Orpheum). Art director is the title for a variety of similar job functions in theater, advertising, marketing, publishing, fashion, film and television, the Internet, and video games. Location shooting is the shooting of a film or television production in a real-world setting rather than a sound stage or backlot. The location may be interior or exterior.
