Tumbler (pigeon)
Tumbler pigeons are varieties of domesticated pigeons descendant from the rock dove that have been selected for their ability to tumble or roll over backwards in flight. This ability has been known in domesticated breeds of pigeons for centuries. In Wendell Levi's book ''The Pigeon'', reference is made to pigeons with this tumbling ability existing in India before the year 1590. Charles Darwin, in his book ''The Origin of Species'', makes reference to the Short-faced Tumbler which was a popular breed during his lifetime, and still can be found exhibited at pigeon shows today. There are many different breeds that have descended from the original tumbler stocks. Birmingham Roller
The Birmingham Roller is a breed of domesticated roller pigeon that originated in Birmingham, England. They were developed via selective breeding, for their ability to do rapid backward somersaults while flying. Rolling motion It is unknown why the Birmingham Roller and other roller pigeons tumble. While it is true that the birds do perform backward somersaults in flight, the exact neurological causes of the rolling behaviour are still unknown. This bird has a genetic inclination to flip backwards, provided adequate training, diet, and exercise. The spinning can appear to be so fast that the bird looks like a ball of feathers falling toward the ground. They recover from the spin and return to their flock, called a “kit” in competition. The pigeon continues to do the same acrobatics with regular frequency, often in unison with other birds in the kit. The Vienna Long-faced Tumbler is one of numerous breeds of tumbler pigeons, reared and exhibited for their ability to spin and tumble down suddenly whilst in flight. Komorner Tumbler
The Komorn Tumbler (commonly called a Komorner, in Slovak Komárňanský kotrmeliak, in Hungarian Komáromi bukó) is a breed of fancy pigeon developed over many years of selective breeding. The breed has American and European varieties that are recognized as separate breeds at shows with classes catering for ''American Komorner Tumblers'' and ''European Komorner Tumblers''. Originally bred for acrobatic flying as a tumbler pigeon, Komorners are seldom free-flown today, and exist only for exhibition in pigeon shows. Origin The breed originated in the 18-19th century in the city Komárno in Austrian Empire (on the current Slovak- Hungarian border). Its ancestors were imported by Ottoman Turks from eastern parts of the Ottoman Empire. Iranian Highflying Tumbler
The Iranian Highflying Tumbler pigeon also known as "Persian Highflying Tumbler" in Europe and "Tehrani" in Iran is a breed of domestic pigeon bred in Iran for performance and endurance flying competitions. They fly at a very high altitude and at times out of sight. The tumbling is nothing like a Birmingham Roller, individual flips, occasionally hovering before it does the flip. The best birds tend to rise above the rest of the kit to show off their talents. The flying characteristic of the Iranian Highflyer is that of a soaring/hovering bird (as opposed to the raking flying style of for instance the Tippler), with a slower wing beat than most flying breeds of pigeons. They are endurance flyers gaining altitude quickly, and have been reported to fly as long as 8 to 12 hours.
