Tufts Jumbos Sailing
The Tufts University Sailing Team represents Tufts University in the intercollegiate sport of sailing. They are members of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA), the governing body for collegiate sailing, and compete at the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA). Led by head coach Johnny Norfleet since 2023, who took the reins from Ken Legler after an illustrious 43-year career at Tufts, the team is one of the most successful in the history of college sailing. Burgee
A burgee is a distinguishing flag, regardless of its shape, of a recreational boating organization. In most cases, they have the shape of a pennon, pennant. Etiquette Yacht clubs and their members may fly their club's burgee while under way and at anchor, day or night. Sailing vessels may fly the burgee either from the main masthead or from a halyard under the lowermost starboard spreader. Most powerboats (i.e. those lacking any mast or having a single mast) fly the burgee off a short staff at the bow; two-masted power vessels fly the burgee at the foremast. Etchells
The International Etchells Class is a racing class of one-design sailing boats, designed by American Skip Etchells. Production The first 36 boats were built by Skip Etchells and the Old Greenwich Boat Company between 1967 to 1969. In the early 1970s Skip Etchells finished hulls which were moulded for him by Tillotson-Pearson. Since being established as a one-design class, boats have been built by numerous other manufacturers, including Bashford Boat Builders (later known as Sydney Yachts), Pamcraft and Phil Smidmore (trading as Pacesetter Etchells PTY.) in Australia, Ontario Yachts in Canada, and Robertson and Sons Ltd., David Heritage Racing Yachts and Petticrows Limited, all in the United Kingdom. Dave Curtis
David Adams Curtis (born June 22, 1946 in Marblehead, Massachusetts) is an American sailor and sail maker. As a sailor he competed at the highest level in many National and International classes. He won the World Championships in the Etchells severn times and was second six time. However Dave was successful in many other classes he with five North American, four US, one European and one World Championship in the Soling, and one in the J/24 he won the Worlds once and four North American Championships. As sail maker he held franchises for, among others, Horizon Sails, North Sails and Doyle Sails. Mark Mendelblatt
Mark Mendelblatt (born February 19, 1973) is an American yachtsman. Married to windsurfer Carolina Mendelblatt (née Borges), he primarily sails the Laser Radial, a one-design class of small ( long, and ) single-handed sailing dinghy. Beginning in 2005, he also started to race in the two-person keelboat Star class. At age 11, he won the International Optimist Dinghy National Sailing Championships, and at age 18, he won the Laser II World Championships. A three-time college All-American at Tufts University, he won a silver medal in the Laser at the 1999 Pan American Games. In 2004, he won a silver medal at the Laser World Championships. Early and personal life Mendelblatt, who is Jewish, was born in St. Petersburg, Florida. His father, Frank, and his brother, David (also a sailor), are ophthalmologists.
