Tufton is a small village in Hampshire, England, on the River Test The River Test is a chalk stream in Hampshire in the south of England. Tufton is a crossroads hamlet in the parish of Henry's Moat in Pembrokeshire, Wales, on the B4329, a road between Eglwyswrw and Haverfordwest across the Preseli Hills. It is in the community of Puncheston. Name The origin of the place name Tufton is not clear. There is a tenuous link with the ''Tufton Arms'' in the 1792 marriage of Joseph Foster Barham of Trecwn (who inherited Pembrokeshire property from his mother, Dorothea Vaughan, and whose son Charles Henry was a Pembroke JP) to Lady Caroline Tufton, daughter of Sackville Tufton, 8th Earl of Thanet. Inn The ''Tufton Arms'' inn stands at the crossroads. The pub holds a beer festival on the first Friday in July. According to a 19th-century map, this was the only inn in the parish. Tufton Farm
Tufton Farm, located in Albemarle County, Virginia, borders the Monticello plantation. The farm was passed down from Peter Jefferson to his son Thomas Jefferson, whose grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph inherited the property. Thomas Jefferson experimented with plants and sustainable farming. It is now the site of the Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants. History The land for the farm was patented in two separate tracts of 150 acres each by Peter Jefferson in 1740 and 1755. After he had the forest land cleared by enslaved people, he grew tobacco. When he died, the property passed to his son, Thomas Jefferson. The farm was part of the original 5,000 acres that Jefferson owned. It was a quarter farm, located about from Monticello's main house gates. Earl of the Isle of Thanet, in practice shortened to Earl of Thanet, was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1628 for Nicholas Tufton, 1st Baron Tufton. He had already succeeded as second Baronet of Hothfield in 1631 and been created Baron Tufton, of Tufton in the County of Sussex, in 1626, also in the Peerage of England. The Baronetcy, of Hothfield in the County of Kent, was created in the Baronetage of England in 1611 for his father, John Tufton. Lord Thanet was succeeded by his son, the second Earl. He married Lady Margaret Sackville, daughter of Richard Sackville, 3rd Earl of Dorset and Lady Anne Clifford. Nicholas Tufton, 1st Earl of Thanet (1578–1631) was an English peer. Nicholas Tufton was the son of Sir John Tufton, and Christian Browne, the daughter of Sir Humphrey Browne, Justice of the Common Pleas, by Agnes Hussey, the daughter of John Hussey, 1st Baron Hussey of Sleaford, by his second wife, Anne Grey.. Tufton represented Peterborough in 1601 and Kent from 1624 to 1625 as Member of Parliament. He was knighted by James I on 13 April 1603, and was appointed a justice of the peace in Kent and then a deputy lieutenant in 1623. He succeeded his father in the baronetcy in 1625, was created Baron Tufton, of Tufton, on 1 November 1626, and Earl of the Isle of Thanet on 5 August 1628. He owned Bodiam Castle, having purchased it in 1623. John Tufton, 2nd Earl Of Thanet
John Tufton, 2nd Earl of Thanet (15 December 1608 – 7 May 1664) was an English nobleman and supporter of Charles I of England. He was the eldest son of Nicholas Tufton, 1st Earl of Thanet, and Lady Frances Cecil, granddaughter of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley. Career Thanet was a staunch Cavalier, taking part in the Battle of Edge Hill and in 1642 he led a regiment of 100 horse to try to raise a rebellion in Sussex, taking part in the Capture of Chichester, the Battle of Muster Green, and the Siege of Chichester in support of Sir William Brockman in Kent. However, Brockman's revolt quickly collapsed, and Thanet was forced to surrender. He suffered considerably from confiscations and sequestrations of his large estates during the English Civil War. Among his properties was Bodiam Castle, purchased from the Levett family in 1639, which Thanet sold for £6,000 in 1644. Nicholas Tufton, 3rd Earl of Thanet (7 August 1631 – 24 November 1679), styled Lord Tufton until 1664, was an English nobleman. Tufton was the eldest son of John Tufton, 2nd Earl of Thanet, and Lady Margaret, daughter of Richard Sackville, 3rd Earl of Dorset and Lady Anne Clifford. Through his father, he was a great-great-grandson of Lord Burghley. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1655 and again from 1656 to 1658, for allegedly conspiring to capture Charles II. In 1664 he succeeded his father in the earldom. He successfully claimed the barony of de Clifford through his maternal grandmother Lady Anne Clifford (which had been in abeyance since the death of his great-grandfather George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland). This barony conferred the honour of hereditary High Sheriff of Westmorland. Lord Thanet married Lady Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Boyle, 2nd Earl of Cork, on 11 April 1664. They had no children. Tufton was the second son of John Tufton, 2nd Earl of Thanet, by Lady Margaret, daughter of Richard Sackville, 3rd Earl of Dorset and Lady Anne Clifford. Sackville Tufton, 7th Earl of Thanet (11 May 1688 – 4 December 1753) of Newbottle, Northamptonshire, known as Sackville Tufton until 1729, was a British Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1722 until 1729 when he succeeded to the peerage as Earl of Thanet. Tufton was the son of Colonel the Honourable Sackville Tufton, fifth son of John Tufton, 2nd Earl of Thanet. His mother was Elizabeth, daughter of Ralph Wilbraham of Newbottle.
