Tuff, Texas
Tuff is a ghost town in Bandera County, in the U.S. state of Texas, in the Texas Hill Country, which is part of the Edwards Plateau. It is considered part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Tuff also went by the name of Crockett. A post office was established at Tuff in 1901 and remained in operation until 1926, with Ola Adams as postmistress. Mail was then sent to the community from the Medina post office. It had a general store and 50 residents in 1914, which went down to 10 by 1925. Tuff was not shown on county maps in the 1940s, but log cabins were renovated in the 1990s. The community became a ghost town by 2000. Geography Tuff is located west of Bandera in western Bandera County. Education The community's first school was built on a land grant donated by Andy Crockett in 1883. Edwards Plateau
The Edwards Plateau is a geographic region at the crossroads of Central Texas, Central, South Texas, South, and West Texas. It is bounded by the Balcones Fault to the south and east, the Llano Uplift and the Llano Estacado to the north, and the Pecos River and Chihuahuan Desert to the west. Bandera (Spanish: "flag", ) is the county seat of Bandera County, Texas, United States, in the Texas Hill Country, which is part of the Edwards Plateau. The population was 857 at the 2010 census. Bandera calls itself the " Cowboy Capital of the World". History A visitor to Bandera can see a sign on Main Street in front of the fire department that states that Bandera was founded by Polish Roman Catholic immigrants from Upper Silesia. St. Stanislaus Catholic Church was built by those immigrants, and the church is one of the oldest in Texas. Many of the residents are descended from those original Polish immigrants. Several stories exist regarding the origin of the name "Bandera". One says that in the 19th century, a flag was placed at the top of a path that came to be called Bandera Pass, due to ''bandera'' being the Spanish word for flag. Medina is an unincorporated community in Bandera County, Texas, United States. It is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. Medina is famous for its apples. The community's population was estimated to be 515 in 2000. History Several families had settled in the community and a sawmill was built in Medina around 1865. A post office was established at Medina in 1880 and developed a gin, a corn mill, a hotel, a private bank, three general stores, and two churches serving 150 residents by the end of the next decade. Many residents were farmers who raised livestock. The population of Medina jumped to 400 by 1914, which then plunged to 250 when the Great Depression forced people to search for new jobs in the early 1930s. It did manage to recover from the Great Depression, with the population growing to 475 by the late 1940s with several businesses and four churches. Texas Hill Country
The Texas Hill Country is a geographic region of Central and South Texas, forming the southeast part of the Edwards Plateau. Given its location, climate, terrain, and vegetation, the Hill Country can be considered the border between the American Southeast and Southwest. The region represents the very remote rural countryside of Central Texas, but also is home to growing suburban neighborhoods and affluent retirement communities. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. It is a type of gazetteer.
