Tuddenham
Tuddenham is a village and civil parish in the West Suffolk district of Suffolk in eastern England. In 2005 it had a population of 450. falling to 423 at the 2011 Census. RAF Tuddenham Between 1943 and 1963, RAF Tuddenham was a Royal Air Force station close to the village. During World War II, Short Stirling and Avro Lancasters Squadrons were stationed at the base, and between 1959 and 1963, 107 Squadron operated three Thor nuclear missiles. Today, the site has been returned to agricultural use, and little remains of the airfield facilities. Local features The nearby Cavenham Heath National Nature Reserve is breeding ground of stone curlews and woodlarks. The Icknield Way Path passes through the village on its 110-mile journey from Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire to Knettishall Heath in Suffolk. Royal Air Force Station Tuddenham or RAF Tuddenham is a former Royal Air Force station located south east of Mildenhall, Suffolk, England and north west of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Project Emily
Project Emily was the deployment of American-built Thor intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBMs) in the United Kingdom between 1959 and 1963. Royal Air Force (RAF) Bomber Command operated 60 Thor missiles, dispersed to 20 RAF air stations, as part of the British nuclear deterrent. Due to concerns over the buildup of Soviet missiles, US President Dwight D. Eisenhower met Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in Bermuda in March 1957 to explore the possibility of short-term deployment of IRBMs in the United Kingdom until the long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) were deployed. The October 1957 Sputnik crisis caused this plan to be expedited. West Suffolk District is a Non-metropolitan district, local government district in Suffolk, England, which was established on 1 April 2019, following the merger of the existing Forest Heath district with the borough of Borough of St Edmundsbury, St Edmundsbury. The two councils had already had a joint Chief Executive since 2011. At the 2011 census, the two districts had a combined population of 170,756. It is currently controlled by the Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party. The main towns in the new district are Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Suffolk, Newmarket, Brandon, Suffolk, Brandon, Haverhill, Suffolk, Haverhill and Mildenhall, Suffolk, Mildenhall. Joseph Thomas Last
Joseph Thomas Last (1849, Tuddenham- 1933, Shortlands) was an English missionary, explorer and naturalist. In 1872 Last was ordained at the Church Missionary College. From 1874 to 1876 he was in East Africa at the mission at Kisulutini. He briefly returned to Britain and then in 1877 he was appointed to the Usagara Mission at Mpwapwa. In 1880 he founded a new station at Mamboya in the Nguru mountains. After seven years in East Africa he returned to Britain in December 1884. Later he was associated with Royal Geographical Society and the Imperial British East Africa Company. He visited Portuguese East Africa in 1885, explored the Namuli Mountains and discovered the caves at Mangapwani in Zanzibar. Mesac Thomas
The Right Reverend Mesac Thomas (10 May 1816 – 15 March 1892) was an Anglican bishop in Australia. Thomas was born in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion (Cardiganshire), Wales, to Welsh parents: his father was a John Thomas of Shrewsbury; and his mother was Elizabeth, ''née'' Williams (daughter of Edward Williams, of Llwynyrhedydd). He was educated at Oswestry School, Shrewsbury and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1840 and M.A. in 1843. Ordained in 1840, he was a Curate at Bishop Ryder Church, Birmingham before holding incumbencies at Tuddenham and Attleborough. In 1851 he became Secretary of the Colonial Church and School Society, a post he held for twelve years until his consecration as the inaugural Bishop of Goulburn in 1863. Charles James Blomfield
Charles James Blomfield (29 May 1786 – 5 August 1857) was a British divine and classicist, and a Church of England bishop for 32 years. Early life and education Charles James Blomfield was born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, the eldest son (and one of ten children) of Charles Blomfield (1763–1831), a schoolmaster (as was Charles James's grandfather, James Blomfield), JP and chief alderman of Bury St Edmunds, and his wife, Hester (1765–1844), daughter of Edward Pawsey, a Bury grocer. He was therefore unusual in becoming a Bishop of London not from an ecclesiastical, aristocratic or landowning background. His brother was Edward Valentine Blomfield, a classical scholar. Forest Heath
Forest Heath was a local government district in Suffolk, England. Its council was based in Mildenhall. Other towns in the district included Newmarket. The population of the district at the 2011 Census was 59,748. The district's name reflected the fact that it contains parts of both Thetford Forest and the heathlands of Breckland. The district was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, by a merger of Newmarket Urban District and Mildenhall Rural District. Forest Heath district was merged with the borough of St Edmundsbury on 1 April 2019 to form a new West Suffolk district. Forest Heath was the home to two of the largest United States Air Force (USAF) airbases in the UK: RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall, as well as the headquarters of British horse racing, Newmarket Racecourse.
