Tucker's Settlement, Missouri
Tucker’s Settlement is an abandoned village in Saline Township in Perry County, Missouri, United States.State Historical Society of Missouri: Perry County http://shs.umsystem.edu/manuscripts/ramsay/ramsay_perry.html Originally, there were two Tucker Settlements in Perry County: "Long Tucker's Settlement" and "Short Tucker's Settlement". Long Tucker's Settlement was situated in Saline Township on Saline Creek, while Short Tucker Settlement was located further south in the Barrens, which is the present site of Perryville. The two settlements were founded by two different Tucker families who had arrived at the same time in what would become Perry County, Missouri in the late 18th century. Joseph Tucker and his nine sons: James, Nicholas, William, Francis, John, Peter, Thomas, Joseph, and Michael, who were Catholic, settled along Saline Creek and were known as the "Long Tuckers" due to their tall stature, whereas the other family, which was much shorter in stature, settled to the ... There are 114 counties and one independent city in the U.S. State of Missouri. Following the Louisiana Purchase and the admittance of Louisiana into the United States in 1812, five counties were formed out of the Missouri Territory at the first general assembly: Cape Girardeau, New Madrid, Saint Charles, Saint Louis, and Ste. Perry County is a county located in the southeastern portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 18,956. Its county seat is Perryville. The county was officially organized on November 16, 1820 (effective January 1, 1821) from Ste. Genevieve County and was named after Oliver Hazard Perry, a naval hero of the War of 1812. History Early Native Americans The first inhabitants of what is now Perry County were Mississippian Mound Builders who cultivated corn and constructed earthen mounds. The Mississippian cultures inhabited the region until their decline in the 12th and 13th centuries. Remnants of their earthen mounds can be found in the eastern part of the county. Saline Township is one of the eight townships located in Perry County, Missouri, in the United States of America. Name Saline Township was named for Saline Creek, which flows through the township. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. It is a type of gazetteer. Saline Creek (Mississippi River)
Saline Creek is a creek that rises in western Ste. Genevieve County and flows east briefly passing through a portion of northern Perry County before emptying into an offshoot of the Mississippi River north of St. Mary across from Kaskaskia Island. Etymology The stream's original name - La Rivière de Saline - is French meaning ''The River of the Saltworks'' and refers to the two natural salt springs found in the area, which also gave name to the nearby creek and its tributaries called ''Saline Creek'' or ''Saline River''. Perryville, Missouri
Perryville is a city in Perry County, Missouri, United States. The population was 8,555 at the 2020 United States census. Perryville is the county seat of Perry County. History Perryville was selected the county seat of Perry County by Robert T. Brown, Joseph Tucker, and Thomas Riney, who had been appointed to select the seat of justice. In 1821, Bernard Layton deeded to the commissioners in exchange for one town lot. Fifty-three of the 99 town lots were sold for $1,486.25, which was used to build the first courthouse. The current courthouse is the third such structure. It was built in 1904 at a cost of $30,000. Perryville and Perry County were named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, Naval hero of the War of 1812.
