Tu Chen
Tu Chen 陳都 (born 19 March 1935) is a Taiwanese-American scientist and entrepreneur who played a central role in the development of thin-film media for computer hard disk drives. In 1983, he co-founded Komag which was subsequently purchased by Western Digital in 2007. Since his retirement in 1999, Chen has devoted himself to technological advancement in Taiwan. Background and education Chen grew up in Yilan County, Taiwan before attending the National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, from which he earned a B.S degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He served in the ROTC (Taiwan) and then as a high school math and physics teacher before moving to the United States in 1961. He received his M.S. in 1964 and his Ph.D in 1967, both from the University of Minnesota and both in Metallurgical Engineering. Yilan County, Taiwan
Yilan County, alternately spelled I-lan, is a County (Taiwan), county in northeastern Taiwan, Republic of China. Name The name ''Yilan'' derives from the Taiwanese indigenous peoples, indigenous Kavalan people. Other former names in reference to this area in the Yilan Plain include ''Kabalan'', ''Kavalan'', ''Kavaland'', ''kap-a-lan'', ''Yiland'' and ''Gilan''. Before 2009, the county's official name was transliterated as Ilan. History Early history Since early ages, many people have traveled from far places to Yilan. Taiwanese aborigines, Indigenous tribes that have settled in Yilan are Kavalan people and Atayal people. Christopher Henry Bajorek (born November 26, 1943) is a data storage engineer noted for his leadership in developing and implementing magnetoresistive sensors into magnetic stripe readers, tape drives and hard disk drives. Early life and education Christopher Henry Bajorek was born in Tel Aviv, Mandatory Palestine, on November 26, 1943. His parents were George L. H. (POW Kolyma, Russia, 1940–42) and Rosalia (Lipka) B. (POW Kazakhstan, Russia, 1940–42); He married Janet Fullmer in 1965. They have two children: Peter C. and Jennifer L. Bajorek attended Pasadena City College before transferring to the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California, where he received a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in 1967, a Master of Science (M.S.), in electrical engineering (EE) in 1968; and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1972 all from Caltech. The World Federation of Taiwanese Associations (WFTA) () is pro-democracy alliance of Taiwanese Associations from the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South America. The association meets annually for conferences. History Officially established on September 7, 1974 in Vienna, Austria, WFTA's founding member states are the United States (43 chapters), Canada (15 chapters), Europe (10 chapters), Japan, and Brazil. The Kaohsiung Incident, also known as the Formosa Incident, the Meilidao Incident, or the ''Formosa Magazine'' incident,tang was a crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations that occurred in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, on 10 December 1979 during Taiwan's martial law period. The incident occurred when ''Formosa Magazine'', headed by released political prisoner Shih Ming-teh and veteran opposition legislator Huang Hsin-chieh, and other opposition politicians held a demonstration commemorating Human Rights Day to promote and demand democracy in Taiwan. At that time, the Republic of China was a one-party state and the government used this protest as an excuse to arrest the main leaders of the political opposition.
