Tsimbazaza Zoo
The Botanical and Zoological Garden of Tsimbazaza, short Tsimbazaza Zoo (in French ''Parc Botanique et Zoologique de Tsimbazaza'' or ''PBZT'') is a zoological and botanical garden in the neighbourhood of Tsimbazaza in Antananarivo, Madagascar, located just north of the National Assembly of Madagascar building. It is said to house "the finest collection of Wildlife of Madagascar, Malagasy wildlife", with several unique species on display. The zoo has a Museum of Ethnology and Paleontology, museum with collections of tribal carvings and the skeleton of extinct megavertebrates, including an elephant bird, pygmy hippos, and giant lemurs. It also contains Madagascar's largest herbarium (herbarium code TAN) with roughly 80,000 plant specimens. In November 1989, the World Wide Fund for Nature, WWF celebrated its tenth year in Madagascar by opening an environmental teaching center at the zoo. Typhonodorum Lindleyanum
''Typhonodorum'' is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the family (biology), family Araceae. The single species making up this genus is ''Typhonodorum lindleyanum''. The genus is native to Madagascar, the Comores, Zanzibar, Réunion and Mauritius. This genus is believed to be closely related to ''Peltandra'' even though ''Peltandra'' is only found in North America and there don't appear to exist closely related genera in the African mainland. There isn't fossil evidence to link the two genera so it has been proposed that there once was a genus in Africa from which the two genera had originated. The African mainland genus spread to North America and to Madagascar 50 million years ago before it broke off. The composition of Madagascar's wildlife reflects the fact that the island has been isolated for about 88 million years. The prehistoric breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana separated the Madagascar-Antarctica-India landmass from the Africa-South America landmass around 135 million years ago. Madagascar later split from India about 88 million years ago, allowing plants and animals on the island to evolve in relative isolation. As a result of the island's long isolation from neighboring continents, Madagascar is home to an abundance of plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth.
