Kazakhstan is divided into 17 regions ( kk, облыстар/''oblystar''; singular: облыс/''oblys''; russian: области/''oblasti''; singular: область/''oblast). Aqmol
Akmol ( kk, Ақмол, ''Aqmol''), formerly Malīnovka until 2007, is a rural locality ( selo) and the administrative center of Tselinograd District, Akmola Region, Kazakhstan, roughly west of Astana. Population: As of 2012, it had a population of 5769 people. As of 2015, Zhanat Beisekeyev is the local ''akim'' (mayor). Geography The village is located on the bank of Lake Zhalanash, on the paved road which connects Astana and Korgalzhyn. Zhanazhol (5.4 km) and Rodionovka (5.7 km) are nearby. The closest railway station is in Astana. Akmol is east of the Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve, part of the UNESCO heritage site Saryarka — Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan. An ''akim'' ( kk, әкім, әкімдер / ''äkimder''; ky, аким; russian: аким) is the head of a local government in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. ''Akim'', meaning "God will establish", is derived from the Arabic word '' hakim'', which means "ruler" or "governor". Astana
Astana, previously known as Akmolinsk, Tselinograd, Akmola, and most recently Nur-Sultan, is the capital city of Kazakhstan. The city lies on the banks of the Ishim (river), Ishim River in the north-central part of Kazakhstan, within the Akmola Region, though administered as a city with special status separately from the rest of the region. A 2020 official estimate reported a population of 1,136,008 within the city limits, making it the List of most populous cities in Kazakhstan, second-largest city in the country, after Almaty, which had been the capital until 1997.
