IDF March (Hebrew: מארש צה"ל or צה"ל צועד, ''Tzahal Tzo'ed'') is the official march music of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which is played in ceremonies and parades held by the military. It was written in 1963 by composer Yoav Talmi. History Until 1963, the IDF did not have any official march, and the song "Kitatenu Balayla Tzoedet" was used to accompany the marches. At the beginning of 1963, a competition was declared for an official march song for the IDF, with 208 competing composers registering to the contest. The marches that made it to the final stage of the competition were played by the IDF Orchestra (led by Conductor Izhak Graziani) to the general public at '' Heichal Hatarbut'' concert hall, and the Army Radio broadcast the ceremony live to all army bases. The jury included senior musicians on the one hand, and IDF soldiers themselves on the other. The soldiers cast their votes by phone. Yoav Talmi's march song was unanimously chosen. Hebrew
Hebrew (; ; ) is a Northwest Semitic language of the Afroasiatic language family. Historically, it is one of the spoken languages of the Israelites and their longest-surviving descendants, the Jews and Samaritans. It was largely preserved throughout history as the main liturgical language of Judaism (since the Second Temple period) and Samaritanism. A march, as a musical genre, is a piece of music with a strong regular rhythm which in origin was expressly written for marching to and most frequently performed by a military band. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF; he, צְבָא הַהֲגָנָה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל , ), alternatively referred to by the Hebrew-language acronym (), is the national military of the Israel, State of Israel. Yoav Talmi
Yoav Talmi ( he, יואב תלמי; born April 28, 1943, is an Israeli conductor and composer. Biography Yoav Talmi was born in Kibbutz Merhavia He studied composition and orchestral direction first in Israel, at the Rubin Academy of Music, later renamed The Buchmann-Mehta School of Music in Tel Aviv, and then in the United States, at the Juilliard School. In 1966, he was awarded the Koussevitzky Conducting Prize at the Tanglewood Music Center. In 1973, he won the Rupert Foundation Conducting Competition in London. Yoav Talmi is married to Er'ella, once a flutist and today an author of children's books and adults novels. They have two children and three grandchildren. In 2001, the Université Laval awarded him an honorary doctorate. In 2009, he was made an Officer of the National Order of Quebec. The Israel Defense Forces Orchestra ( he, תזמורת צה"ל; Tizmoret Tzahal) is the main musical ensemble of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). It comprises musicians and singers who have passed the auditions before enlistment into the IDF, mostly in compulsory service. It performs at military ceremonies, official visits, and honor guards, as well as various non-official community events. History The Israel Defense Forces Orchestra was established in 1948 as a part of the newly formed Israel Defense Forces. It was formed out of four orchestras: The Alexandria Division Band, The Brigade Band, The Artillery Corps Band and The Givati Brigade Band. Izhak Graziani
Izhak Graziani ( (August 4, 1924 - July 7, 2003) was an Israeli music conductor. Biography Izhak ("Ziko") Graziani was born in Ruse, Bulgaria, where he studied music and conducting. In 1948, he immigrated to Israel and joined the IDF Orchestra as a trumpet player. Music career Graziani played with the orchestra until 1952. In 1960, after the retirement of conductor Shalom Ronli-Riklis, Graziani took his place. He went on to become conductor of the IBA Radio Orchestra (later renamed IBA Radio and TV Orchestra). Graziani was also Music Director of the Eurovision Song Contest 1979. Graziani retired in 2003 and died three months later. He collaborated with Leonard Bernstein.
