Très-Saint-Sacrement is a parish municipality located along the Chateauguay River in the Montérégie region of Quebec, Canada. The population as of the 2021 Canadian census was 1,189. Established in 1885, the municipality completely encloses the village of Howick, which was incorporated as a separate entity in 1915. Howick is the third smallest municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec, located in Le Haut-Saint-Laurent Regional County Municipality. The population as of the Canada 2021 Census was 850. Situated along the English River in the heart of the Chateauguay Valley, it is approximately 50 minutes southwest of Montreal and 20 minutes north of the Canada–United States border. Route 138 is a major highway in the Canadian province of Quebec, following the entire north shore of the Saint Lawrence River past Montreal to the temporary eastern terminus in Kegashka on the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The western terminus is in Elgin, at the border with New York State south-west of Montreal (connecting with New York State Route 30 at the Trout River Border Crossing). Part of this highway is known as the '' Chemin du Roy'', or King's Highway, which is one of the oldest highways in Canada. Alexander Ellice (17431805) was a Scottish merchant, landowner and lawyer who made his fortune in the North American fur trade. Early life He was born in Auchterless, Scotland, the eldest of five sons of a successful miller, also named Alexander Ellice, and was baptised on 28 May 1743. He attended Marischal College and was admitted to the Scottish bar. Business career In 1765, he and his four brothers moved to Schenectady, New York. The next year, he entered into a partnership to engage in fur trading and general merchandising in upstate New York and the lower Great Lakes region. The firm of Phyn, Ellice and Company prospered, and his brother Robert became a partner in 1768. Phyn, Ellice and Company imported goods, first from Scotland, then from London.
