''Schloss'' (; pl. ''Schlösser''), formerly written ''Schloß'', is the German language, German term for a building similar to a château, palace, or manor house. Related terms appear in several Germanic languages. In the Scandinavian languages, the cognate word ''slot''/''slott'' is normally used for what in English could be either a palace or a castle (instead of words in rarer use such as ''palats''/''palæ'', ''kastell'', or ''borg''). In Dutch, the word ''slot'' is considered to be more archaic. Nowadays, one commonly uses ''paleis'' or ''kasteel''. Mistelgau
Mistelgau is a municipality in the district of Bayreuth in Bavaria in Germany. The eponymous village is the seat of both the municipality as well as the municipality association Mistelgau. Name The name "Mistelgau" is a compound of "Mistel" (German for mistletoe) and "Gau" (here: shire), possibly referring to the abundance of mistletoes in a nearby oak forest, which was cut down in 1780. Today, mistletoes are not quite as common in the area as the name would suggest. Geography Location The main village Mistelgau is located 10 km to the west of Bayreuth. It is the centre of the so-called Hummelgau, the north-northeastern boundary of Franconian Switzerland and its transition into the Obermain foothills. The eastern part of the municipality is located on modestly hilly terrain used for agriculture, whereas the (south-)western parts are already part of the Franconian Switzerland with its steeper relief and wooded slopes. Bayreuth () is a ''Landkreis'' (district) in Bavaria, Germany. It surrounds, but does not include the city of Bayreuth. The district is bounded by (from the north and clockwise) the districts of Kulmbach, Hof, Wunsiedel, Tirschenreuth, Neustadt an der Waldnaab, Amberg-Sulzbach, Nürnberger Land, Forchheim and Bamberg. History The district was established in 1972 by merging the former districts of Bayreuth and Pegnitz, adding the town Gefrees of the former district of Münchberg and the town of Speichersdorf of the former district of Kemnath. Geography The sources of the White Main and the Red Main are both located in the district.
