Western Lowland Gorilla
The western lowland gorilla (''Gorilla gorilla gorilla'') is one of two Critically Endangered subspecies of the western gorilla (''Gorilla gorilla'') that lives in Montane ecosystems#Montane forests, montane, Old-growth forest, primary and secondary forest, secondary forest and lowland swampland in central Africa in Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. It is the nominate subspecies of the western gorilla, and the smallest of the four gorilla subspecies. The western lowland gorilla is the only subspecies kept in zoos with the exception of Amahoro, a female eastern lowland gorilla at Antwerp Zoo, and a few mountain gorillas kept captive in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Colo (gorilla)
Colo (December 22, 1956 – January 17, 2017) was a western gorilla widely known as the first gorilla to be born in captivity anywhere in the world and the oldest known gorilla in the world in 2017. Colo was born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium to Millie Christina (mother) and Baron Macombo (father), and lived there for her entire life. She was briefly called "Cuddles" before a contest was held to officially name her. (Mrs. Howard Brannon of Zanesville, Ohio, won the contest.) Colo's name was derived from the place of her birth, Columbus, Ohio. Life The Columbus Zoo first introduced gorillas in 1951. It was in 1956 that two gorillas first produced offspring in the zoo. Fatou (gorilla)
Fatou is a gorilla residing at Berlin Zoo, Germany. Estimated to have been born in 1957 in the wild, she was brought from West Africa to France by a sailor in 1959, and then acquired by the Berlin Zoo. In 1974 she gave birth to the first gorilla to be raised in Berlin, Dufte. She celebrated her 65th birthday on April 13, 2022. Since the death of Colo in January 2017, she has likely been the oldest living gorilla in the world (initially together with American gorilla Trudy, who died in July 2019). Through her only offspring, Dufte, Fatou is a grandmother of two, great-grandmother of 13 (six living), and great-great-grandmother of 16 (ten living).
