Troy Residential Historic District
Troy Residential Historic District is a national historic district located at Troy, Montgomery County, North Carolina. The district encompasses five contributing dwellings in a residential section of Troy. They were built between 1871 and 1940 and includes notable examples of Queen Anne and Classical Revival style architecture. They are the Joseph Reese Blair House (1893, 1903), Mills-Thompson House (1890, 1930), Wade-Arscott House (1871, 1890s), Bruton-Allen House (1895, 1927), and Thompson Rental House (1940). Troy is a town in Montgomery County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,188 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. The short story by Charles W. Chesnutt, called "The Sheriff's Children," is set in Troy. History The Hotel Troy, Montgomery County Courthouse, and Troy Residential Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Town of Troy has had 12 mayors. Roy J. Maness served as Mayor of Troy from 1978 until 2018. Sherri Harris Allgood succeeded Maness as Mayor of Troy in December 2018. Montgomery County, North Carolina
Montgomery County is a rural county located in the southern Piedmont of the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,751. Its county seat is Troy. History The county was formed in January 1779, by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly of 1778, from part of Anson County. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. The North Carolina General Assembly of 1779 named James Roper, James Allen, Cornelius Robeson, Samuel Person, and John Collier of Randolph County as the commissioners of Montgomery County and charged them with determining the location for a county seat. The Queen Anne style of British architecture refers to either the English Baroque architecture of the time of Queen Anne (who reigned from 1702 to 1714) or the British Queen Anne Revival form that became popular during the last quarter of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century.
