Trowbridge Town Football Club is a football club based in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England. They are currently champions of the and play at The Daykin Estates Ground, Woodmarsh, on the southern edge of the town. History A Trowbridge Town team was originally formed in 1880 and became one of the founding members of the Bristol & District League in 1892, finishing as runners-up in the league's first season. They stayed in the Bristol league for three seasons and then joined the Western League where they stayed until 1958 apart from two occasions; firstly between 1898 and 1901 when they resigned from the league, secondly 1907–1913 when they joined the Wiltshire County League. After success in the Western League, in 1958 they won promotion to the Southern League. Trowbridge
Trowbridge ( ) is the county town of Wiltshire, England, on the River Biss in the west of the county. It is near the border with Somerset and lies southeast of Bath, 31 miles (49 km) southwest of Swindon and 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Bristol. The town had a population of 37,169 in 2021. Long a market town, the Kennet and Avon canal to the north of Trowbridge played an instrumental part in the town's development as it allowed coal to be transported from the Somerset Coalfield and so marked the advent of steam-powered manufacturing in woollen cloth mills. The town was the foremost producer of this mainstay of contemporary clothing and blankets in south west England in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, by which time it held the nickname "The Manchester of the West". Bernie Wright
Bernard Peter Wright (born 17 September 1952), nicknamed Bernie the Bolt, is an English former footballer. A tough centre-forward, he scored 78 goals in 320 league games in a nine-year career in the Football League. A youth player at Birmingham City, he joined Paget Rangers of the Midland Combination, before having a successful trial at Walsall in 1971. He moved on to Everton in 1972. After one season with the "Toffees" he moved back to Walsall. In 1976, he transferred to Bradford City, winning promotion out of the Fourth Division in 1976–77, before signing for Port Vale two years later for a £9,000 fee. In 1980, he went into non-league football with Kidderminster Harriers, later playing for Trowbridge Town, Cheltenham Town, Worcester City, and Gloucester City. Kenneth Smith (21 May 1932 - June 2011) was an English footballer who played as a centre forward. Smith played league football between 1952 and 1962 for Sunderland, Blackpool, Shrewsbury Town, Gateshead, Darlington, Carlisle United and Halifax Town. Jack Hallam (footballer)
John "Jack" Hallam (26 June 1869 – 7 March 1949) was an English professional footballer who played as an outside right. He was capped at full international level for Wales. He played 133 games for Small Heath in the Football Alliance and the Football League, and also represented Oswestry Town, Swindon Town and Trowbridge Town. Career Hallam was born in Oswestry, Shropshire, on the border with Wales, the eldest child of Lister Hallam of Hull, Yorkshire and Eliza Ann Bell of Leeds. Hallam started his football career with clubs in his native town. While with Oswestry Town he won international honours for Wales, on 23 February 1889 in a 4–1 defeat to England. A report of the match said that Hallam "showed great speed but was evidently nervous and hesitated too much". Colin Tavener (born 26 June 1945) is an English former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Tavener began his career with Bath City, but was released by Bath manager Malcolm Allison without making his debut. He later played for Trowbridge Town and in the Football League for Hereford United. Thomas Roberts was an English professional footballer who played 120 games in The Football League as an inside forward and wing half for Bristol Rovers between 1925 and 1930. Roberts was born in Bristol in the early 20th century and started his footballing career in the Bristol and Suburban Association Football League. He joined Trowbridge Town from Bedminster Victoria in 1924, and after playing just ten League games for Trowbridge he took part in a trial with Football League club Bristol Rovers. The trial was a successful one, and he signed for Rovers on 11 March 1925. David Pyle
Walter David Pyle (12 December 1936 – 8 February 2002) was a professional footballer who played as a centre half in The Football League for Bristol Rovers and Bristol City between 1955 and 1963. Born in Trowbridge, Pyle started his career playing in his home town for Trowbridge Colts, before graduating to senior side Trowbridge Town in 1954. After a year playing non-League football for them he signed his first professional contract in 1955 when he joined Bristol Rovers. He played 139 League games for Rovers in seven years, but when they were relegated to the Football League Third Division in 1962 he crossed the city to join Bristol City. During his single season with City he played eight games in the Football League, but returned to non-League football at the end of the campaign when he joined Westbury United.
