Trondheim Jazz Festival
Trondheim Jazz Festival or Jazzfest Trondheim (initiated 1979 in Trondheim, Norway under the name JazzMazz) is an annual music festival held in spring time. History The festival is a continuation of JazzMazz (1979–1994), and changed name to Jazzfest in 1994. It is centered on the Jazz program at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU, and the 25th anniversary in 2004 was dedicated to them. The festival is a collaborative arrangement between Trondheim Jazzforum, the venue Blæst, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Studentersamfundet i Trondhjem, Dokkhuset and Norsk jazzforum. The first leader was Bjørn Willadsen, followed by Ernst-Wiggo Sandbakk. From 2007 they have been giving the «talentprisen» award, and initiated a long lasting financial cooperation with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU. Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Ernst-Wiggo Sandbakk
Ernst-Wiggo Sandbakk (born 28 September 1957) is a Norwegian jazz musician (drums) and music tescher. Known from a series of concerts, festival performances and records with the likes of DumDum Boys, Thorgeir Stubø, Frode Alnæs, Palle Mikkelborg, Terje Bjørklund, Vigleik Storaas, Bjørn Alterhaug, Nils Petter Molvær, Knut Riisnæs, John Pål Inderberg, Sondre Meisfjord, Jan Gunnar Hoff, Kjersti Stubø and Henning Sommerro. Career Sandbakk was born in Kjeldebotn, Ballangen. He appeared on Thorgeir Stubø's first album ''Notice'', later establishing himself in Trondheim, where he teaches on the Jazz programat at the Trondheim Musikkonservatorium, where he holds an instrumental teaching degree from 1982. In addition he is Associate professor at the Musikkonservatoriet i Tromsø, and has also written several textbooks on drumming like ''Hvordan spille moderne trommesett'', to mention one. Norsk Jazzforum or The Norwegian Jazz Forum (originally established in 1953, and later reappeared on June 8, 1997 in Oslo, when The Norwegian Jazz Federation and Association Norwegian Jazz Musicians fused into The Norwegian Jazz Forum) is a member and interest organization that gathers the Norwegian jazz community, and works to promote the Norwegian jazz in terms of cultural policy and the arts. Biography The Norwegian Jazz Forum was established in 1997 by the merger of 'Norsk Jazzforbund' (established 1953) and 'Foreningen Norske Jazzmusikere'. A former Norwegian Jazz Forum existed in the 60's, when Karin Krog took an initiative to give the Norwegian jazz community a voice.
