Trond Helge Torsvik
Trond Helge Torsvik (born October 12 1957) is a Norwegian professor of geophysics at the University of Oslo. He directs the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics. In 2015 Torsvik received the Leopold von Buch award for his outstanding contributions to the understanding of geodynamics. The prize is awarded by the . In 2016 he also received the Arthur Holmes Medal & Honorary Membership from the European Geosciences Union. Education Torsvik received a Ph.D. from the University of Bergen in 1985. After this he was a researcher at the University of Bergen and the Norwegian Geological Survey. Also he was a guest lecturer at the University of Michigan (1993–1994) and a guest lecturer at the University of Lund (1999–2001). Geophysicist
Geophysics () is a subject of natural science concerned with the physical processes and physical properties of the Earth and its surrounding space environment, and the use of quantitative methods for their analysis. The term ''geophysics'' sometimes refers only to solid earth applications: Earth's shape; its gravitational and magnetic fields; its internal structure and composition; its dynamics and their surface expression in plate tectonics, the generation of magmas, volcanism and rock formation. An academy (Attic Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια; Koine Greek Ἀκαδημία) is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning (and generally also research or honorary membership). The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Etymology The word comes from the ''Academy'' in ancient Greece, which derives from the Athenian hero, ''Akademos''. Outside the city walls of Athens, the gymnasium was made famous by Plato as a center of learning. The sacred space, dedicated to the goddess of wisdom, Athena, had formerly been an olive grove, hence the expression "the groves of Academe".
