Trieste's trolleybus system was operational from 1935 until 1975. History The first trolleybus route in Trieste, “la linea dei colli” (the hills route), was inaugurated in 1935 between the central Goldoni Square and Campo Marzio, a neighborhood in the south of the city near the new commercial port. Before World War II., two more routes were created. In 1940 these routes were operational: * 4 Piazza Goldoni - Piazza Foraggi * 10 Piazza Ciano – San Cilino * 12 Piazza Goldoni - Campo Marzio In the early 1950s, under the Allied Military Government of Free Territory of Trieste (1945-1954), the municipal transportation authority (A.C.E.G.A.T.) decided to replace the tramway with new trolleybus lines. Trieste ( , ; sl, Trst ; german: Triest ) is a city and seaport in northeastern Italy. It is the capital city, and largest city, of the autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, one of two autonomous regions which are not subdivided into provinces. Alfa Romeo 140AF is an Italian trolleybus produced from 1949 to 1960. History This trolleybus helped make Alfa Romeo quite popular as a manufacturer of public transport vehicles, especially trolleybuses. The 140AF was very popular in Italy during the 1950s. This trolleybus was produced in around 20 different versions. The technical characteristics of the different versions of the 140AF were similar but the design and appearance was quite different. The bodies used for the trolleybuses were manufactured by Breda, SIAI Marchetti-CGE, Macchi-Marelli, Stanga-TIBB, CRDA-TIBB, Pistoiesi and Caproni. Technical characteristics The 140AF vehicles used TIBB GLM 1303c, Marelli MCT 60B (MCT 64 B 56 per i filosnodati), CGE CV 1216 oppure CV 1227 A motors. Different versions had 135,160 or163 hp engines. Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico ("United Shipbuilders of the Adriatic") was an Italian manufacturer in the sea and air industry which was active from 1930 to 1966. This shipyard is now owned by Fincantieri. History In 1930, Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino based at Trieste merged with another Italian company, the Cantiere Navale Triestino of Monfalcone, forming the ''Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico'' (CRDA). The new company built a number of light and heavy cruisers for the Regia Marina (Royal Italian Navy) between the wars, as well as some 27 submarines. The ocean liner ''Conte di Savoia'' was also constructed in 1932. During the World War II, CRDA Trieste built two battleships for the Regia Marina, ''Vittorio Veneto'' and ''Roma''. CRDA survived the postwar shakeup in the shipbuilding industry and went on to build several more commercial liners in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as a few naval vessels. Tecnomasio was an Italian scientific and precision instrument company founded in the 1860s. By the beginning of the 20th century the company has begun to produce electrical equipment. SIAI-Marchetti was an Italian aircraft manufacturer primarily active during the interwar period. History The original company was founded during 1915 as SIAI (''Società Idrovolanti Alta Italia'' - Seaplane Company of Upper Italy). As suggested by its name, the firm initially specialised in the manufacture of seaplanes, the vast majority of which were intended for the Italian armed forces. Perhaps its most prominent early aircraft was the SIAI S.16, a seaplane that had been configured to perform both aerial reconnaissance and bomber roles, but also proved itself quite capable of long-distance flights.
