Tritonioidea
Tritoniidae is a taxonomic family of nudibranchs in the suborder Cladobranchia, shell-less marine gastropod molluscs.MolluscaBase (2018)Tritoniidae Lamarck, 1809.Accessed on 2021-01-01 This family includes some of the largest known nudibranchs, with the NE Atlantic species ''Tritonia hombergii'' reaching 20 cm in length. It is the only family in the monotypic superfamily Tritonioidea. Distribution These nudibranchs occur worldwide in warm and temperate seas and in the coldest waters and deep sea, wherever the octocorals which they eat are found. Ecology Members of the family Tritoniidae feed on octocorals, including sea pens, alcyonarian soft corals, and gorgonians, often being cryptic in shape and colouration upon them.García-Matucheski, S. and Muniain, C. (2011). Predation by the nudibranch ''Tritonia odhneri'' (Opisthobranchia:Tritoniidae) on octocorals from the South Atlantic Ocean. Marine Biodiversity, 41(2), 287–297. It is a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Tritoniidae. The genus was described in 1907 by the British diplomat and malacologist Charles Eliot. Description ''Tritoniella'' can be differentiated from '' Tritonia'' (the only other Tritoniidae sharing its distribution range) by a wide dorsal ridge and lack of foliaceous tufts (gills). It can grow to a length of up to . Most individuals have a ridge running along the middle of the back. The colour is variable, ranging from a translucent milky white to yellow or orange. Distribution ''Tritoniella'' can be found in the Southern Ocean around the coast of Antarctica and along the Scotia Arc up north to Burdwood Bank south of the Falkland Islands at depths between and . Ecology ''Tritoniella'' feeds mainly on soft corals, but may also feed on hydroids and sea anemones. ''Tritoniella belli'' incorporates the chimyl alcohol ingested from '' ... Tritonia Festiva
The diamondback tritonia (''Tritonia festiva'') is a species of nudibranch, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Tritoniidae. It is an opportunistic predator of other marine invertebrates. Classification The diamondback tritonia is classified within the Mollusca phylum, the Gastropoda class, the Nudibranchia order, the Tritotoniidae family, and the ''Tritonia'' genus. This species was first described as ''Lateribranchiaea festiva'' (Stearns, 1873). Distribution The diamondback tritonia inhabits the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Sightings have been most prevalent on the west coast of North America and have been reported as far north as Alaska. The species has also been identified along the coast of Japan and both North and South Korea. Habitat The diamondback tritonia is a benthic organism as the sea floor is where this species finds its prey. Their flattened body plan allows for maneuverability into small spaces common in rocky intertidal areas. Body plan The ... Georges Cuvier
Jean Léopold Nicolas Frédéric, Baron Cuvier (; 23 August 1769 – 13 May 1832), known as Georges Cuvier, was a French natural history, naturalist and zoology, zoologist, sometimes referred to as the "founding father of paleontology". Cuvier was a major figure in natural sciences research in the early 19th century and was instrumental in establishing the fields of comparative anatomy and paleontology through his work in comparing living animals with fossils. Cuvier's work is considered the foundation of vertebrate paleontology, and he expanded Linnaean taxonomy by grouping classes into phylum, phyla and incorporating both fossils and living species into the classification. Cuvier is also known for establishing extinction as a fact—at the time, extinction was considered by many of Cuvier's contemporaries to be merely controversial speculation. In his ''Essay on the Theory of the Earth'' (1813) Cuvier proposed that now-extinct species had been wiped out by periodic catastrophi ...
