Trip Shakespeare
Trip Shakespeare was an American rock band formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the late 1980s/early 1990s. The band included Dan Wilson and John Munson, who would later go on to be founding members of Semisonic. Origins The band originated when Harvard University English student Matt Wilson (guitar/vocals) teamed up with Elaine Harris (drums), a Harvard grad student in biological anthropology, in the early 1980s. Harris had responded to a notice posted by Wilson seeking "wicked percussion hands." Matt Wilson and Munson had played together in an earlier band (E Brown), and Wilson had not been impressed by his bass playing, so he didn't want Munson to audition for the new band. "But he came over anyway and played, and he'd improved a lot," Wilson later recalled. "We ended up begging him to just give it a try and stay around." Volt (EP)
''Volt'' is the final work released by Minneapolis alternative rock band Trip Shakespeare. A six-song EP of covers, it was released in 1992 by Minneapolis label Clean Records. ''Volt'' includes songs by Nick Lowe, Thunderclap Newman, Big Star, the Zombies, Hüsker Dü, and Neil Young. History The recording of the songs on ''Volt'', which were intended to be Trip Shakespeare's fifth album, followed two albums for major label A&M Records, ''Across the Universe'' and ''Lulu''. Both were critically well-reviewed but suffered from low sales. Inspired by the then-current 1992 Los Angeles riots, the band chose songs about peace, revolution and freedom as a unifying concept for the album. A&M initially encouraged the project, but became unsure how to market it. A&M's promotions department, upon hearing the album, responded by saying "What do we do with this?", according to bassist John Munson. ''Are You Shakespearienced?'' is the second studio album released by Minneapolis alternative rock band Trip Shakespeare. It was released in 1989 on Minneapolis indie label Gark Records, then reissued in 1998 on Minneapolis label Clean/Twin/Tone Records, and again in 2014 on Omnivore Recordings. The album was the first to feature Dan Wilson, brother of founding member and main songwriter Matt Wilson, who had joined after the recording of Trip Shakespeare's debut, 1986's ''Applehead Man''. Recorded live in the studio without headsets, the album featured "Toolmaster of Brainerd," a song that "insanely links dairyland folklore with the enduring rock myth of guitar-hero supremacy." ''Applehead Man'' is the debut studio album released by Minneapolis alternative rock band Trip Shakespeare. It was released in 1986 on Minneapolis label Gark Records, then reissued in 1998 on Minneapolis label Clean/Twin/Tone Records, and again in 2014 on Omnivore Recordings. It was the only Trip Shakespeare album not to feature Dan Wilson, brother of founding member and main songwriter Matt Wilson, who joined after its recording. Grunge
Grunge (sometimes referred to as the Seattle sound) is an alternative rock genre and subculture that emerged during the in the American Pacific Northwest state of Washington, particularly in Seattle and nearby towns. Grunge fuses elements of punk rock and heavy metal, but without punk's structure and speed. The genre featured the distorted electric guitar sound used in both genres, although some bands performed with more emphasis on one or the other. Like these genres, grunge typically uses electric guitar, bass guitar, drums and vocals. Grunge also incorporates influences from indie rock bands such as Sonic Youth. ''Lulu'' is an album by the Minneapolis-based band Trip Shakespeare, released in 1991. The band supported the album with a North American tour. "Bachelorette" was a modern rock hit. The album's title track, a possible tribute to Hüsker Dü, has the refrain, "Do you remember? Do you recall?" Those words are printed in large type on the album's liner notes, with the last phrase altered to "dü you recall"; Hüsker Dü's name is Danish for "do you remember". Production Recorded at Pachyderm Studios, the album was produced by the band and Justin Niebank. It was recorded live in the studio. Dan Wilson felt that it was the first Trip Shakespeare album over which the band had almost total creative control. The majority of the songs were written by Matt Wilson.
