''Trigonogenius globulum'', the globular spider beetle, is a species of spider beetle in the family Ptinidae. It is found in Africa, Australia, Europe and Northern Asia (excluding China), North America, and South America. The species name has been frequently misspelled as ''globulus''. Spider Beetle
Spider beetles make up the subfamily Ptininae, in the family Ptinidae. There are approximately 70 genera and 600 species in the subfamily, with about 12 genera and 70 species in North America north of Mexico. Spider beetles have round bodies with long, slender legs. Many species are flightless, either in females only or both sexes. They are generally 1–5 mm long, and reproduce at the rate of two to three generations per year. They are so named because of a resemblance to spiders. Some species have long legs, antennae that can seem like an additional pair of legs, and a body shape that may appear superficially like that of a spider. The larvae and the adults of most spider beetles are scavengers on dry plant or animal matter, but some species are known to be ant associates. Ptinidae is a family of beetles in the superfamily Bostrichoidea. There are at least 220 genera and 2,200 described species in Ptinidae worldwide. The family includes spider beetles and deathwatch beetles. The Ptinidae family species are hard to identify because they are so small, and they have a compact body structure. Antoine Joseph Jean Solier (8 February 1792, in Marseille – 27 November 1851, in Marseille) was a French naturalist, entomologist and plant collector. Bostrichoidea is a superfamily of beetles. It is the type superfamily of the infraorder Bostrichiformia. Description The Bostrichoidea are united by the following features: modified cryptonephridism, the structure of the aedeagus in males, and the lack of a basal mandibular mola in larvae. Aside from this, Bostrichoidea show a range of morphologies. For example, in Bostrichidae alone, the adult body shape varies from convex to flattened, the body length from 2 to 50 mm, and the colour may be yellow, brown or black and sometimes has a metallic hue. Ecology Bostrichoids generally live in dry habitats.
