Tremont House, also known as the Tremont Hotel, is a historic building in the Collingwood, Ontario#Creative Simcoe Street, Creative Simcoe Street neighbourhood of the Collingwood, Ontario#Collingwood Heritage Conservation District, Collingwood Heritage Conservation District. It is located at 80 Simcoe Street in Collingwood, Ontario, Collingwood, Ontario, Canada. History The Tremont House was built in 1889 by John McCormick. Located across the street from the town’s train station at the time, it was originally a 24 room, luxury hotel. Started in March, the construction was completed in only three months. The hotel opened on June 27, 1889. The three-storey structure was built after a fire destroyed dozens of businesses in the downtown Collingwood area, at the time when many of the town's wooden buildings were being replaced by brick. Tremont House (1829– c.1895), sometimes called the Tremont Hotel, was a hotel designed in 1829 by Isaiah Rogers in Boston, Massachusetts. Notable guests included Davy Crockett and Charles Dickens. Description The Tremont House was a four-story, granite-faced, neoclassical building, located at the corner of Tremont and Beacon Streets, with its main entrance on Tremont. It incorporated many hotel "firsts": * Indoor plumbing * Indoor toilets and baths * Reception area * Locked rooms for the guest * Free soap * Bellboys Among this long list of innovations, it is probably best known as the first hotel with indoor plumbing and running water. The Tremont House was a hotel located in Chicago, Illinois. A modern hotel also bears the same name. Original First hotel The original hotel's building was built in 1833. It was a three-story wooden structure located at the northwest corner of the intersection of Lake Street and Dearborn Street. It was lost to a fire in 1839. It took its name from the Boston Tremont House. It was later recounted by a reporter that he recalled the hotel having been a three-story frame structure approximately long and wide. The building was originally a rooming house. Its original proprietor of the property was Starr Foot, who sold it to Malliory & Able in 1835. The operation was then sold to a man named Dorwin in 1837. Dorwin sold the lease months later that year to brothers Ira Couch and James Couch.
