Trematomus
''Trematomus'' is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes, belonging to the family Nototheniidae, the notothens or cod icefishes. These fishes occur in the Southern Ocean. Taxonomy ''Trematomus'' was first described as a genus in 1902 by the Belgian-born British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger when he described four new species of notothen from specimens collected on the ''Southern Cross'' Expedition. In 1938 ''John Roxborough Norman'' designated ''T. newnesi'' as the type species, this being the species described first in Boulenger’s text. In 1982 Arkady Vladimirovich Balushkin created the new genus ''Pseudotrematomus'', in which he placed all the species in ''Trematomus'' other than ''T. newnesi'', but this classification has not been widely accepted. Some authorities place this genus in the subfamily Trematominae, but the 5th edition of '' Fishes of the World'' does not include subfamilies in the Nototheniidae. The generic name ''Trematomus'' is made up of ''trema'' ...

Trematomus Bernacchii
The emerald rockcod (''Trematomus bernacchii''), also known as the emerald notothen is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Nototheniidae, the notothens or cod icefishes. It is native to the Southern Ocean where it is a commercially important species. Taxonomy The Emerald rockcod was first formally described in 1902 by the Belgian-born British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger with the type localities given as Cape Adare in Antarctica at a depth of 5-8 fathoms and Duke of York Island at a depth of 3-4 fathoms. In 1982 the Russian ichthyologist Arkady Vladimirovich Balushkin placed this species, and all the other species in its genus bar the type species, '' T. newnesi'', in the new genus ''Pseudotrematomus'' but this has not been widely accepted. The specific name honours the Australian Australian physicist and astronomer Louis Bernacchi who carried out much of the exploring and collecting of specimens during the Southern Cross Expedition, on ...

Nototheniidae
: ''In some scientific literature, the term "cod icefish" is used to identify members of this family. This should not be confused with the term "icefish," which refers to the "white-blooded" fishes of the family Channichthyidae. See Icefish (other).'' Nototheniidae, the notothens or cod icefishes, is a family of ray-finned fishes, part of the suborder Notothenioidei which is traditionally placed within the order Perciformes. They are largely found in the Southern Ocean. Taxonomy Nototheniidae was described as a family in 1861 by the German-born British ichthyologist Albert Günther with the type genus being ''Notothenia'' which had been described in 1844 by Sir John Richardson with the species ''Notothenia coriiceps'' which Richardson had also described in 1844 subsequently being designated as the type in 1862 by Theodore Nicholas Gill. The name ''Notothenia'' means “coming from the south”, a reference to the Antarctic distribution of the genus. They are traditio ...
