Tredegar Park And Marshfield
Tredegar Park and Marshfield is an electoral ward for Newport City Council in south Wales. It was created in 2022 by combining the former wards of Tredegar Park and Marshfield. It is represented by three city councillors. Description The Tredegar Park and Marshfield ward covers the communities (civil parishes) of Tredegar Park and Marshfield, additionally the communities of Coedkernew, Michaelstone-y-Fedw and Wentlooge, the latter comprising the former ward of Marshfield. The ward was formed by the merger of the former Marshfield and Tredegar Park wards, following recommendations of an electoral boundary review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales. The review was designed to improve electoral parity, towards an average electorate per councillor of 2,146. A ward is a local authority area, typically used for electoral purposes. In some countries, wards are usually named after neighbourhoods, thoroughfares, parishes, landmarks, geographical features and in some cases historical figures connected to the area (e.g. William Morris Ward in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, England). It is common in the United States for wards to simply be numbered. The Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales ( cy, Comisiwn Ffiniau a Democratiaeth Leol Cymru) is a Welsh Government sponsored body, responsible for defining borders for local elections and government in Wales. The name of the commission was changed in 2013 from the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales ( cy, Comisiwn Ffiniau Llywodraeth Leol i Gymru), as a result of the Local Government (Democracy) (Wales) Act 2013 ( cy, Deddf Llywodraeth Leol (Democratiaeth) (Cymru) 2013 ). 2022 Newport City Council Election
Elections to Newport City Council were held on 5 May 2022 along with elections to the other 21 local authorities in Wales, community council elections in Wales and 2022 United Kingdom local elections. The previous full council election took place in May 2017, though there had also been a number of by-elections in the city in the intervening period. Background The Labour Party had controlled Newport since 2012 and the Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and independents were hoping to make some inroads at this election. Following an electoral boundary review, the overall number of electoral wards increased from 20 to 21, with the total number of councillors increasing by one, from 50 to 51. Propel (political Party)
Propel (formerly the Welsh National Party and later Welsh Nation Party) is a sovereignist and Welsh nationalist political party in Wales which advocates Welsh independence from the United Kingdom. The party was formed in early 2020 by its current leader Neil McEvoy. Propel currently has only one county councillor in Wales. 2022 Welsh Local Elections
The 2022 Welsh local elections are due to be held on 5 May 2022 to elect members of all twenty-two local authorities in Wales. They are being held alongside other local elections in the United Kingdom. The last elections were held in 2017. Background In the last local elections in 2017, 1,271 seats were elected. The Labour Party won 468 seats, independent candidates won 309 seats, Plaid Cymru won 208 seats, the Conservative Party won 184 seats and the Liberal Democrats won 63 seats. Other parties including the Green Party won 22 seats. Newport City Council () is the governing body for Newport, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. It consists of 51 councillors, who represent the city's 20 wards. The council is currently, and has historically been, held by the Labour Party. However from 2008 to 2012 the council was controlled jointly by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats due to there being no party with an overall majority.
