Tredegar Park (ward)
Tredegar Park ( cy, Parc Tredegyr) is a community (Wales), community (civil parish) of the city of Newport, Wales, Newport. It is named after the Tredegar Park, nearby park, although the community covers a much smaller area. Description The community is bounded by the Ebbw River to the northeast, the Great Western Main Line to the east, Pencarn Lane to the south, and the grounds of Tredegar House to the northwest. It consists of the 1970s Duffryn estate and immediate surroundings. Many new private housing estates have been built around Duffryn. Governance Until 2022 Tredegar Park was the name of the electoral ward coterminous with the community, surrounded by the Marshfield, Newport, Marshfield ward to the south, west and east. Duffryn
Duffryn ( cy, Dyffryn) is a large housing estatebr>in the southwest of the city of Newport, Wales, Newport, south Wales comprising a large portion of the Tredegar Park electoral district (ward). Built on land belonging to Tredegar Housebr> it was completed in 1978 and at the time won several awards for its design. The layout of the estate, as viewed from above, is that of large terraces undulating around a central wooded area. Originally a Council Estate, Duffryn is now a mix of private ownership and Newport City Homes RSL (Registered Social Landlord) properties. The design of the estate is the result of a council competition. It was won by a consortium committed to the theories of planning devised in the architecture department of Cambridge University in the 1960s. 2022 Newport City Council Election
Elections to Newport City Council were held on 5 May 2022 along with elections to the other 21 local authorities in Wales, community council elections in Wales and 2022 United Kingdom local elections. The previous full council election took place in May 2017, though there had also been a number of by-elections in the city in the intervening period. Background The Labour Party had controlled Newport since 2012 and the Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and independents were hoping to make some inroads at this election. Following an electoral boundary review, the overall number of electoral wards increased from 20 to 21, with the total number of councillors increasing by one, from 50 to 51. Tredegar Park And Marshfield
Tredegar Park and Marshfield is an electoral ward for Newport City Council in south Wales. It was created in 2022 by combining the former wards of Tredegar Park and Marshfield. It is represented by three city councillors. Description The Tredegar Park and Marshfield ward covers the communities (civil parishes) of Tredegar Park and Marshfield, additionally the communities of Coedkernew, Michaelstone-y-Fedw and Wentlooge, the latter comprising the former ward of Marshfield. The ward was formed by the merger of the former Marshfield and Tredegar Park wards, following recommendations of an electoral boundary review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales. The review was designed to improve electoral parity, towards an average electorate per councillor of 2,146. Newport City Council () is the governing body for Newport, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. It consists of 51 councillors, who represent the city's 20 wards. The council is currently, and has historically been, held by the Labour Party. Marshfield ( cy, Maerun) is a village and community of Newport, Wales. It sits approximately 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Newport, and 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Cardiff. The area is governed by Newport City Council. The community includes Castleton. Its population in 2011 was 3,054. Description The ward is bounded by Cardiff to the southwest, Caerphilly to the northwest, the Bristol Channel to the south, the mouth of the River Usk to the east, Graig ward to the north, and Tredegar Park and Gaer wards to the northeast. It is mostly rural and has a farming economy. The community is bound by the city boundary to the west, the A48(M) to the north and Great Western Main Line to the south. Tredegar House
Tredegar House (Welsh: ''Tŷ Tredegar'') is a 17th-century Charles II-era mansion on the southwestern edge of Newport, Wales. For over five hundred years it was home to the Morgan family, later Lords Tredegar; one of the most powerful and influential families in the area. Described as, "the grandest and most exuberant country house in Monmouthshire" and one of the "outstanding houses of the Restoration period in the whole of Britain", the mansion stands in a reduced landscaped garden of forming the non-residential part of Tredegar Park. The property became a Grade I listed building on 3 March 1952 and has been under the care of the National Trust since March 2012. Great Western Main Line
The Great Western Main Line (GWML) is a main line railway in England that runs westwards from London Paddington to . It connects to other main lines such as those from Reading to Penzance and Swindon to Swansea. Opened in 1841, it was the original route of the first Great Western Railway which was merged into the Western Region of British Railways in 1948. It is now a part of the national rail system managed by Network Rail with the majority of passenger services provided by the current Great Western Railway franchise. The line has recently been electrified along most of its length. The eastern section from Paddington to was electrified in 1998. Ebbw River
The Ebbw River (; cy, Afon Ebwy) is a river in South Wales which gives its name to the town of Ebbw Vale. The Ebbw River is joined by the Ebbw Fach River (Welsh: Afon Ebwy Fach meaning 'little Ebbw river') at Aberbeeg. The Ebbw Fach is itself fed by a left-bank tributary, the River Tyleri. The tributary Sirhowy River joins on the right bank at Crosskeys, then the river continues flowing south east, through the town of Risca, then through the western suburbs of Newport, alongside Tredegar Park.
