Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Whether for recreation or for sport, it is typically practiced at ski resorts, which provide such services as ski lifts, artificial snow making, snow grooming, restaurants, and ski patrol. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1991 were held in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria between 22 January and 3 February, 1991. Sunshine often hit the snow of Saalbach-Hinterglemm during the competitions, who are remembered as some of the sunniest ever. The competitions also saw the international breakthroughs for skiers who would score major successes throughout the 1990s, like Austria's Stephan Eberharter. and Sweden's Pernilla Wiberg. The United States Ski Team arrived late, after two races had been completed. Due to the Gulf War and associated security concerns, the team had withdrawn from World Cup competitions the previous week and returned home to North America. Puy () is a geological term used locally in the Auvergne, France for a volcanic hill. The word derives from the Provençal ''puech'', meaning an isolated hill, coming from Latin ''podium'', which has given also ''puig'' in Catalan, ''poggio'' in Italian, ''poio'' in Galician and Portuguese. Most of the puys of central France are small cinder cones, with or without associated lava, whilst others are domes of trachytic rock, like the of the Puy-de-Dôme. Banff Sunshine Village (formerly Sunshine Village) is a ski resort in western Canada, located on the Continental Divide of the Canadian Rockies within Banff National Park in Alberta and Mt Assiniboine Provincial Park in British Columbia.
