Transport House
Transport House was the headquarters of the Transport and General Workers' Union (T&G), and also originally of the Labour Party, the Trades Union Congress, and the Workers' Travel Association. The term "Transport House" was once a metonym for both Labour Party Headquarters and the T&G. The building located on Smith Square and Dean Bradley Street, London, England was actually owned by the T&G and officially opened in May 1928. The T&G started to occupy it from 1926, moving from their first headquarters in Matthew Parker Street. The TUC moved out to Congress House between 1956 and 1958. The Labour Party moved out in 1980, transferring its headquarters to what later became known as '' John Smith House''. John Smith House (Southwark)
John Smith House is the former Labour Party headquarters at 144–152 Walworth Road in south London. The party first occupied the building in 1980, vacating its former headquarters at Transport House. It was renamed in memory of John Smith, the former leader of the Labour Party who died in office in May 1994, less than two years after becoming leader. Holborn ( or ) is a district in central London, which covers the south-eastern part of the London Borough of Camden and a part ( St Andrew Holborn Below the Bars) of the Ward of Farringdon Without in the City of London. Theobalds Road
Theobalds Road is a road in the Holborn district of London. It is named after Theobalds Palace because King James I used this route when going between there and London, travelling with his court and baggage of some 200 carts. For this reason, it was also known as the King's Way which is now the name of the nearby road, Kingsway. A tram tunnel was built under Kingsway in 1902–1906 which had its north-eastern entrance at Theobalds Road. When the tram network was closed in the 1950s, the Theobalds Road end was used as a flood control centre and movie location. Congress House is the headquarters of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), a British organisation that represents most of the UK's trade unions. It is also an events venue, Congress Centre. The Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU or T&G) was one of the largest general trade unions in the United Kingdom and Ireland – where it was known as the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers' Union (ATGWU) to differentiate itself from the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union – with 900,000 members (and was once the largest trade union in the world).
