Transfixiation
''Transfixiation'' is the fourth studio album by the American noise rock band A Place to Bury Strangers, released February 17, 2015, by Dead Oceans. Singles and music videos The album was preceded by the singles "Straight", released November 19, 2014, and "We've Come So Far", released January 14, 2015. Both songs received music videos: the video for "Straight" was released December 6, 2014, directed by Brook Linder, and features a TV station's signal being hijacked in order to display "a nightmare of analog psychedelia and haunted pop culture imagery", inspired by the Max Headroom broadcast signal intrusion of 1987. The "We've Come So Far" video was released February 19, 2015, and contains footage of the last show at Williamsburg, Brooklyn concert venue Death By Audio which was directed by the venue's co-founder Matt Conboy. Dion Lunadon
Dion Lunadon (born 4 March 1976) is a New Zealand born musician. He is known for being the guitarist and singer of The D4 and bass player in A Place To Bury Strangers. He is also known for his high energy and often unpredictable stage presence. Early life Lunadon was born Dion Palmer in Auckland, New Zealand. Career Lunadon played with a number of New Zealand bands, including The Snitches, Marty Sauce and The Source, Nothing at All! and The Rainy Days. He has also played bass and sang with The Scavengers at various reformation shows Lunadon was a member of the New Zealand rock band The D4, who produced 2 albums and several E.P.s and singles. In 2009, Lunadon formed the band True Lovers. In 2010, Lunadon joined New York noise rockers A Place To Bury Strangers. ''Pinned'' is the fifth studio album by American noise rock band A Place to Bury Strangers. It was released on April 13, 2018 under Dead Oceans. Release On January 31, 2018, the band announced the release of the album, alongside the first single "Never Coming Back". On March 1, 2018 the band released a music video directed by Elizabeth Skadden for the next single, "There's Only One of Us". The third single "Frustrated Operator" was released on April 11, 2018. Tour The band announced a world tour in support of the album from March 2018 to June 2018. Critical reception ''Pinned'' was met with "generally favorable" reviews from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, this release received an average score of 68, based on 10 reviews. Oliver Ackermann
Oliver Edward Ackermann (born November 22, 1976) is an American rock musician, who is the founder of the Brooklyn-based effects pedal company Death By Audio and is guitarist and vocalist for A Place to Bury Strangers, a rock band hailed as "the loudest band in New York". Biography Ackermann was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He spent his childhood in St. Peter, Minnesota and Fredericksburg, Virginia attending Falmouth Elementary School, Drew Middle School, and Stafford High School. Ackermann studied Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design. He returned to Fredericksburg, Virginia and worked at Zolo Designs. Ackermann currently resides in Brooklyn, New York and is a contributor to the Death By Audio space and collective. Musical career In 1995, Ackermann formed Skywave with Paul Baker. Death By Audio was a warehouse space on the first floor of an industrial building in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The warehouse took its name from the boutique effects pedal company, Death By Audio, based in the space. The warehouse operated primarily as a work space for artists and musicians, but also functioned as a recording studio, effects pedal factory, as well as an art and music venue, which received generally positive reviews from critics. Starting in the spring of 2007 part of the space had been used as a venue for underground music and art events. Artists such as Ty Segall, Dirty Projectors, Growing, Tony Conrad, Thurston Moore, R. Max Headroom Broadcast Signal Intrusion
The Max Headroom signal hijacking occurred on the night of November 22, 1987, when the television signals of two stations in Chicago, Illinois, were hijacked, briefly sending a pirate broadcast of an unidentified person wearing a Max Headroom mask and costume to thousands of home viewers. The first incident took place during the sports segment of independent TV station WGN-TV's 9:00 p.m. newscast. Like the later signal intrusion, it featured a person wearing a mask swaying erratically in front of a swiveling corrugated metal panel apparently meant to resemble Max Headroom's animated geometric background. Unlike the later intrusion, the only sound was a loud buzz. This interruption went on for almost 17 seconds before engineers at WGN were able to regain control of their broadcast tower. Signal Hijacking
A broadcast signal intrusion is the hijacking of broadcast signals of radio, television stations, cable television broadcast feeds or satellite signals without permission or license. Hijacking incidents have involved local TV and radio stations as well as cable and national networks. Although television, cable, and satellite broadcast signal intrusions tend to receive more media coverage, radio station intrusions are more frequent, as many simply rebroadcast a signal received from another radio station. All that is required is an FM transmitter that can overpower the same frequency as the station being rebroadcast. Other methods that have been used in North America to intrude on legal broadcasts include breaking into the transmitter area and splicing audio directly into the feed. Noise Rock
Noise rock (sometimes called noise punk) is a noise music, noise-oriented style of experimental rock that spun off from punk rock in the 1980s. Drawing on movements such as minimal music, minimalism, industrial music, and New York hardcore, artists indulge in extreme levels of distortion through the use of electric guitars and, less frequently, electronic instrumentation, either to provide percussive sounds or to contribute to the overall arrangement. Some groups are tied to song structures, such as Sonic Youth. Although they are not representative of the entire genre, they helped popularize noise rock among alternative rock audiences by incorporating melodies into their droning textures of sound, which set a template that numerous other groups followed. ''Under the Radar'' is an American music magazine that features interviews with accompanying photo-shoots. Each issue includes opinion and commentary of the indie music scene as well as reviews of books, DVDs, and albums. The magazine posts web-exclusive interviews and reviews on its website. Items are reviewed based on a rating system in which each album, book, and DVD receives a rating from 1 to 10. The magazine has been in publication since late 2001 and is issued three times per year. The magazine was founded by co-publishers (and husband and wife) Mark Redfern and Wendy Lynch Redfern, who were married on June 2, 2007 and currently run the magazine.
