Train World
Train World is a railway museum in Brussels, Belgium, and the official museum of the National Railway Company of Belgium. It is situated in the preserved buildings of Schaarbeek railway station and in a new shed built to its north. Although scheduled to open in 2014, its opening was delayed until September 2015. The Museum was solemnly opened by King Philippe. Overview The museum is over and displays 22 locomotives. It also displays 1,200 other objects, including an original 19th century railway bridge. One of the most important objects in the museum is the " Pays du Waes" locomotive, dating to 1845, which is the oldest preserved locomotive in Continental Europe. Belgian State Railways Type 51
The Belgian State Railways Type 51 was a class of steam locomotives for shunting and local train service, introduced in 1866. Construction history The locomotives were built by various manufacturers from 1866 to 1905. The machines had an outside frame with the cylinders located inside the frame. During the extended period of time in which these machines were built they underwent various changes, e.g. in the design of the water tanks, shelter, boiler and overall length. Schaarbeek Railway Station
Schaerbeek/Schaarbeek railway station is a railway station in the municipality of Schaerbeek, Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium. Located to the north-east of the centre of Brussels, the station mainly serves trains travelling between central Brussels and Leuven, Antwerp or Brussels National Airport. On these routes it is the first station trains pass through after the North-South connection (North, Central and South stations). Although only local trains stop at Schaerbeek, the station also serves as a terminus for a number of interregional and peak-hour services. As it connects both to the North–South connection and to line 28 through Brussels-West station, it is the point at which trains can be rerouted to reverse direction. SNCB Class 15
Class 15 is a type of electric locomotive operated by SNCB/NMBS. The locomotives were originally used for cross-border services TEE services between France, Belgium and the Netherlands, and, like the class 16, they became surplus after the introduction of Thalys and Class 11s. They earned their keep in their last years of service by pulling commuter "P" trains in the Liège area. Belgium was heavily involved in the early development of railway transport. Belgium was the second country in Europe, after Great Britain, to open a railway and produce locomotives. The first line, between the cities of Brussels and Mechelen opened in 1835. Belgium was the first state in Europe to create a national railway network and the first to possess a nationalised railway system. The network expanded fast as Belgium industrialised, and by the early 20th century was increasingly under state-control. The nationalised railways, under the umbrella organisation National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS/SNCB), retained their monopoly until liberalisation in the 2000s. SNCB Class 23
Class 23 locomotives were part of the 1950s generation of SNCB electric locomotives that included Types 122 (later 22), 123 (later 23), 125, (later 25 and 25.5) and 140 (later 25 and 25.5) built between 1953 and 1961. There were 50 Series 122, 83 Series 123, 16 Series 125 and 6 Series 140 for a total of 155. They were seen across Belgium on passenger and freight trains until they were retired in 2012. Class 23 was later fitted for multiple working, and were often found in pairs. There was no difference in power between the classes as they all used the same traction motors and control equipment. The 23s differed from the 22s in three ways. The most visible was the ventilation grilles. Those on the Type 122 were mounted on the roof and sometimes had problems with water ingestion. SNCB Class 20
Class 20 is a class of electric locomotives formerly operated by SNCB, the national railway of Belgium. Prior to the introduction of the Class 13, Class 20 was the most powerful NMBS/SNCB electric locomotive class in Belgium, a distinction it held for 30 years. They commonly worked on Brussels - Luxembourg services, later sharing passenger duties with the CFL Class 3000s. Unusually for SNCB they are Co-Co locomotives. Development The SNCB Class 20 was based on plans for a four system electric locomotive drawn up by SNCB in 1968. The four system requirement was later dropped and 15 of these locomotives, equipped to run only on 3000 volts DC, were ordered from BN in 1973.
