Savage Republic (originally named Africa Corps) is an American, Los Angeles-based post-punk band, formed in the early 1980s. The group reformed in 2002 and remains active with a different lineup. They are known for lengthy songs with an emphasis on percussion and droning guitars. Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of punk music that emerged in the late 1970s as musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Experimental Rock
Experimental rock, also called avant-rock, is a subgenre of rock music that pushes the boundaries of common composition and performance technique or which experiments with the basic elements of the genre. Artists aim to liberate and innovate, with some of the genre's distinguishing characteristics being improvisation (music), improvisational performances, avant-garde influences, odd instrumentation, opaque lyrics (or instrumentals), unorthodox structures and rhythms, and an underlying rejection of commercial aspirations. Independent Project Records is an American independent record label currently based in Bishop, California. IPR was founded by Bruce Licher in 1980 in Los Angeles, then moved to Sedona, AZ between 1992-2009. The label started when the Project 197 7” EP was released. 1982 was when the first letterpress covers were made. IPR is a partner entity to Independent Project Press. The label is significant for its use letterpress printing as an artistic element in packaging and helping to launch the careers of bands such as Camper Van Beethoven and Savage Republic. ''Tragic Figures'' is the debut studio album by American post-punk band Savage Republic, released in 1982 by Independent Project. The reissue version was augmented with the 1982 single "Film Noir" and the 1984 EP '' Tragic Figure'', among other bonus tracks. The sleeve design, by Bruce Licher, features a photograph of the revolutionary government executing Iranian Kurds on August 24, 1979. The photographer, Jahangir Razmi, won a Pulitzer Prize anonymously but was able to reveal himself in 2006. Guitar
The guitar is a fretted musical instrument that typically has six strings. It is usually held flat against the player's body and played by strumming or plucking the strings with the dominant hand, while simultaneously pressing selected strings against frets with the fingers of the opposite hand.
