Towser Gosden
John Montague "Towser" Gosden (1904–20 October 1967) was a British racehorse trainer based near Lewes, East Sussex. He won a number of important races, although his career was interrupted by the Second World War. He trained Epsom Derby winner Charlottown as a two-year-old, and won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes with Aggressor. He is the father of British racehorse trainer John Gosden. Lewes, East Sussex
Lewes () is the county town of East Sussex, England. It is the police and judicial centre for all of Sussex and is home to Sussex Police, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Lewes Crown Court and HMP Lewes. The civil parish is the centre of the Lewes local government district and the seat of East Sussex County Council at East Sussex County Hall. A traditional market town and centre of communications, in 1264 it was the site of the Battle of Lewes. Epsom Derby
The Derby Stakes, also known as the Epsom Derby or the Derby, and as the Cazoo Derby for sponsorship reasons, is a Group 1 flat horse race in England open to three-year-old colts and fillies. It is run at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey on the first Saturday of June each year, over a distance of one mile, four furlongs and 6 yards (2,420 metres). It was first run in 1780. Charlottown
Charlottown (1963 – 1979) was a Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career which lasted from 1965 until 1967 he ran ten times and won seven races. He is best known for winning the 1966 Derby. Background Charlottown was bred in England by his owner, Lady Zia Wernher's Someries Stud at Newmarket, Suffolk. He was sent into training with John "Towser" Gosden at Lewes in Sussex. He was sired by the Prix du Jockey Club winner Charlottesville and was the fifth and best foal of the racemare Meld who won the Fillies' Triple Crown in 1955. Racing career 1965: two-year-old season Charlottown had a successful first season, being unbeaten in three starts. He won the Solario Stakes at Sandown by eight lengths, the Blackwood Stakes and the Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 1 mile 3 furlongs and 211 yards (2,406 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July. Aggressor (horse)
Aggressor (1955 – 1977) was a British Thoroughbred race horse and sire. In a racing career which lasted from 1957 until July 1960 he ran twenty times and won eleven races. In his first three seasons he showed solid form, winning races including the Solario Stakes, the Coronation Stakes and the Cumberland Lodge Stakes. He reached his peak as a five-year-old in 1960 when he won the John Porter Stakes and the Hardwicke Stakes before recording his biggest success when defeating the outstanding filly Petite Etoile in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. John Gosden
John Harry Martin Gosden (born 30 March 1951) is a British racehorse trainer. He has trained over 3,000 winners worldwide, including winners of the Breeders' Cup Classic, the Derby, the Arc, the King George, the Eclipse, and over 600 winners in the United States. Gosden has trained the winners of over 100 Group 1 races in the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He is generally considered one of the finest and most successful racehorse trainers of his generation. His reputation for honesty and openness has led him to be called "one of the sport's great communicators".
