Townsville West State School
Townsville West State School is a heritage-listed former state school at 29 Ingham Road, West End, City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1921 to 1939. It is also known as Townsville and District Education Centre and Memorial Gates. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 5 October 1998. History The former Townsville West State School, designed by the Queensland Government Architects Office was opened on 10 June 1939. Costing £28,200, the school was built during the Depression by local workers employed under the Unemployment Relief Scheme. The school building of 1937–1939 is the second of three Townsville West State Schools constructed within the same school grounds. The first, constructed in 1886–1887, was one of the earliest public schools of Townsville. West End is an inner suburb of Townsville in the City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. In the , West End had a population of 4,064 people. Geography West End is situated at the base of Castle Hill (the hill). North Townsville Road runs along the southern boundary, and North Ward Road runs inside the western boundary. History The first community cemetery is located in West End. A reflection of attitudes existing during the time it was in use, research has established that it was ethnically segregated. It has been reported that there are separate areas where, at least, Chinese and Aboriginal deceased were interred. During World War 2, the massive Green Street bunker was used by the RAAF. It is now the State Emergency Service building. Townsville West State School opened on 21 March 1887 and celebrated its centenary in 1987. St Mary's School opened on 1 October 1888. Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force
The Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF) was formed in March 1941 after considerable lobbying by women keen to serve, as well as by the Chief of the Air Staff, who wanted to release male personnel serving in Australia for service overseas. The WAAAF was the first and largest of the wartime Australian women's services. It was disbanded in December 1947. History Not long after World War II was declared in 1939, the Royal Australian Air Force had an urgent need for more skilled and semi-skilled signals and maintenance personnel to fulfil its wartime commitments to the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS) for local defence in Australia. Andrew Baxter Leven
Andrew Baxter Leven (2 February 1885 – 1966) was a Scottish-born architect in Australia. As chief architect in the Queensland Department of Public Works, he designed many of Queensland's public buildings, some of which are now heritage-listed. Early life Leven was born in Montrose, Angus in 1885.''Who's Who in Australia, 1921-1950'', p. 424 Leven trained as an architect in Scotland and then immigrated to Queensland in 1910 on the recommendation of friends. Architectural career He became chief architect of the Queensland Department of Public Works (Queensland Government Architect) in 1927. He was a Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects and chairman of the Board of Architects of Queensland and a member of the Architecture Faculty of the University of Queensland. Henry Adam Bruce (16 May 1884 – 11 October 1958), known as Harry Bruce, was an Australian politician and former union organiser. First entering state politics in Queensland before later entering Parliament of the Commonwealth. Biography Born in Wandiligong, Victoria, he was educated at Haileybury College in Melbourne before moving to Queensland to become a bushworker in 1902. Later, he was a sugar grower and an organiser of the Australian Workers' Union (AWU). In 1923 Bruce was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland as the Labor member for the district of Kennedy. In 1932, he was elected as member for The Tableland. In that year he was appointed Secretary of Public Works; in 1938 he was also made Secretary of Public Instruction, a position he held until 1941.
