Tovar (surname)
Tovar, usually preceded by the particle ''de'' (meaning ''from''), is a surname that was adopted in the Middle-Ages by a Castilian noble house that received the lordship of the village of Tovar from Fernando III. It has since spread to several Spanish and a few Portuguese branches. The Tovar surname in the Americas appears mainly as a toponymic derived from the many settlements of this name founded there by the Spanish, and therefore does not share the same genealogical origin. Virginia Tovar Martín (1929–2013) was a Spanish art historian, author, and professor. She was a foremost scholar in the study of architecture and urban planning of Madrid during the Baroque period (c. 1600–1750). Tovar Martín was a Professor of History of Art at the Complutense University of Madrid; and at Autonomous University of Madrid. Biography Virginia Tovar Martín was born on November 29, 1929 in Bérchules, Andalusia, Spain. She received her PhD in 1975 from Complutense University of Madrid, where she studied under the supervision of . In her early scholarly work she focused on architect Juan Gómez de Mora. Vicente López Tovar
Vicente López Tovar (1909–1998) was a Spanish soldier, politician and Spanish maquis, anti-Franco guerrilla fighter. He fought for the Spanish Republican, Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, for the French Resistance in World War II, and led a Invasion of Val d'Aran, failed invasion of Spain in 1944 to oust Francisco Franco. After the Liberation of France Lopez Tovar was decorated with the Legion d'honneur and the Croix de Guerre. A street is named after him in Toulouse, France. Rigoberto Tovar García (March 29, 1946 – March 27, 2005), better known as Rigo Tovar, was a Mexican musician, singer and actor. Famous for his cumbias, Tovar infused traditional Mexican and Latin music with modern instruments like the electric guitar and synthesizer and popular styles such as rock and soul music. Tovar was born and raised in Matamoros, Tamaulipas. After moving to the neighborhood of East End in Houston, Texas, his musical career began to take off in the early 1970s. Blending cumbia, tropical, and modern pop rock, he quickly gained a large following. In 1971, Tovar released his first album entitled ''Matamoros Querido'' which garnered two hits, "Matamoros Querido" and "Lamento De Amor". Guadalupe Natalia Tovar (27 July 1910 – 12 November 2016), known professionally as Lupita Tovar, was a Mexican-born American actress best known for her starring role in the 1931 Spanish-language version of '' Drácula'', filmed in Los Angeles by Universal Pictures at night using the same sets as the Bela Lugosi version, but with a different cast and director.
