Tour Of Ulster
The Tour of Ulster is a road bicycle racing stage race held around the Irish province of Ulster, divided between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It was first run in 1956. It is rated as a National Event on the Union Cycliste Internationale The ''Union Cycliste Internationale'' (UCI; ; en, International Cycling Union) is the world governing body for sports cycling and oversees international competitive cycling events. The UCI is based in Aigle, Switzerland. The UCI issues racing ...'s race classification system. The most prolific winner is Irish rider Sé O Hanlon, who won the race four times between 1961 and 1966. It is currently sponsored by Victus Renewable Energy and so is known as the Victus Tour of Ulster. Dave Lloyd (cyclist)
Dave Lloyd (born 12 October 1949), is an English former professional cyclist. Life Lloyd began racing in 1969. In 1972 he came seventh in the Milk Race before going on to win the William Tell GP, beating Francesco Moser and Freddy Maertens, and riding in the Munich Olympics. In 1973 he turned professional with Raleigh, and over the next three years he won the national 5000m pursuit championship twice and set a national 50-mile road record. In 1976 a heart condition forced a three-year break from cycling. On recovery he restarted as an amateur and over six years won 125 of 133 races. In 1982 he won the Points, King of the Mountains and Overall in the Girvan 3-Day beating a strong field of riders that included Paul Curran, Joey McLoughlin and Jeff Williams. In 1984 he returned to the professional sport, and finally retired from cycling two years later. Lloyd was a framebuilder for 13 years. Ben McKenna (cyclist)
Ben McKenna (1939 – 26 March 1992) was an Irish cyclist. He won the Rás Tailteann in 1959. Early life McKenna was born at Cottage Hill, Stamullen in 1939; his family later moved to Julianstown. Career McKenna was a founding member of St. Patrick's East Meath cycling club in 1955. He first competed in the Rás Tailteann in 1956, and won the competition in 1959. He finished second in 1961 and 1964. McKenna also won the Rás Laighean in 1958, the Mick Beggan Memorial in 1959 and the Tour of Ulster in 1960. He retired from cycling in 1977. Personal and later life McKenna was Chief Commissaire for the 1983 Rás. He also had a role in the reunification of the politically divided Irish cycling world, which culminated in the creation of Cycling Ireland in 1987. McKenna married Grace Bosonnet and had six children; he died in 1992 aged just 52. Brian Connaughton (cyclist)
Brian Connaughton (born 1942/43 in Dublin, Ireland) is an Irish cyclist. He won the Rás Tailteann in 1969. Early life Connaughton is a native of County Meath and was a member of the Garda Síochána (Irish police). Career Connaughton began cycling competitively in 1962 and first competed in the Rás Tailteann Rás Tailteann (; "Tailteann Race"), often shortened to the Rás, is an annual international cycling stage race, held in Ireland. Traditionally held in May, the race returned after a hiatus in 2022 as 5 day event held in June. By naming the rac ... in 1966. He won it in 1969 with five minutes to spare. Billy Kerr
Billy Kerr (26 February 1945 – 14 August 2012) was an Irish cyclist. He competed in the individual road race event at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Biography Kerr was born in February 1945 in Ballymena, Northern Ireland. At the age of 16, Kerr was working in a local shoe factory and later joined the Ballymena Road Club. However, as a junior cyclist, Kerr initially had to give up the sport due to a back injury. After successful physiotherapy, Kerr won multiple club races and national championships in the 1970s. Kerr's took part in the road race and team pursuit events at the 1978 Commonwealth Games, his first international races. Four years later, at the 1982 Commonwealth Games, Kerr was part of the team that finished in fourth place in the team time trial. He also competed at three editions of the UCI World Championships in the late 1970s and early 1980s. David McCann (born 17 March 1973 in Belfast) is an Ireland, Irish former professional road bicycle racer, who rode in the 1996, 2000 and 2012 Olympic Games. He was the Ireland National Cycling Championships, Irish national road race champion in 2000, 2001 and 2006, and won the Irish national time trial championships a record 6 times (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2009 & 2010). He last rode for the Synergy Baku Cycling Project, an Azerbaijan-registered UCI Continental team. Biography In 2005, McCann captured the overall title at the Tour de Korea. Ulster (; ga, Ulaidh or ''Cúige Uladh'' ; sco, label=Ulster Scots, Ulstèr or ''Ulster'') is one of the four traditional Irish provinces.
