Toulminville
Toulminville is a neighborhood of Mobile, Alabama, United States. It began as a small settlement on the property of Harry Theophilus Toulmin, who served as Sheriff of Mobile County in the 1830s. During the American Civil War, Toulminville was mapped along the ''Mobile and Ohio Railroad'' as a significant settlement, northwest of Mobile (see map). In 1945, the remainder of Toulminville was annexed into the city of Mobile. The area of Toulminville has varied over the past decades from being an upper-middle class suburb to having a serious crime problem during most of the 1980s and 1990s, although the trend has been reversed in recent years. Annexation by Mobile Toulminville remained a largely rural settlement until after the Civil War, when it slowly took on the character of a suburb to Mobile. Harry Theophilus Toulmin
Harry Theophilus Toulmin (March 4, 1838 – November 12, 1916) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Alabama. Education and career Born in Mobile County, Alabama, Toulmin read law to enter the bar in 1860. He was in private practice in Mobile, Alabama in 1860. He was a Confederate States Army Colonel from 1861 to 1865, then resumed private practice in Mobile. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1870 to 1872. He was a Judge of the 6th Judicial Circuit of Alabama from 1874 to 1880, then a Judge of the 1st Judicial Circuit of Alabama from 1880 to 1882, the change due to realignment of the circuits. John LeFlore
John L. LeFlore (1903–1976) was a civil rights leader and politician in Mobile, Alabama. While working for the United States Postal Service, LeFlore worked for integration. He founded the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1925 and led it for decades. During the Massive resistance controversy over school desegregation, Alabama expelled the NAACP in 1956, so LeFlore helped found the Non-Partisan Voting League. He served as its director of casework from 1959 until his death, including organizing two lawsuits which reached the United States Supreme Court, one concerning Mobile's at-large method of selecting the commissioners who ran the city ( Mobile v Bolden), and one which led to desegregation of Mobile County's schools (Birdie Mae Davis v. Mobile County ( ) is located in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Alabama. It is the second most-populous county in the state after Jefferson County, Alabama, Jefferson County. William Crawford Gorgas
William Crawford Gorgas KCMG (October 3, 1854 – July 3, 1920) was a United States Army physician and 22nd Surgeon General of the U.S. Army (1914–1918). He is best known for his work in Florida, Havana and at the Panama Canal in abating the transmission of yellow fever and malaria by controlling the mosquitoes that carry these diseases. At the time, his strategy was greeted with considerable skepticism and opposition to such hygiene measures. However, the measures he put into practice as the head of the Panama Canal Zone Sanitation Commission saved thousands of lives and contributed to the success of the Canal's construction. Mobile County Public School System (MCPSS) is a school district based in unincorporated Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The system currently serves areas of Mobile County, including the city of Mobile, with the exception of the cities of Saraland, Satsuma and Chickasaw.
