Touch Compass
Touch Compass is a professional inclusive dance company in Aotearoa New Zealand established in 1997 that has disabled and non-disabled dancers. They have been at the forefront of inclusive dance in New Zealand and have 'paved the way for many dancers and companies across the country.' They create contemporary dance, dance-theatre performance and film. They also have an education programme and have run workshops, community classes and education for schools. Organisation Touch Compass was established in 1997 and has been a registered charity under the name The Touch Compass Dance Trust Board since 2008. They are based in Auckland. Lusi Faiva
Lusi Faiva (born in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington) is a New Zealand- Sāmoan stage performer and dancer and a founding member of Touch Compass. She was recognised for her work with a 2020 Pacific Toa Artist Award at the Arts Pasifika Awards and in 2021 received an Artistic Achievement Award from Te Putanga Toi Arts Access Awards. Early life Born with cerebral palsy, Faiva was taken from her birth parents and placed into an institution by the state. Ted and Peg Jones fostered her at the age of two, and she was reunited with her birth mother at the age of seven, and discovered her Sāmoan (Patamea, Savai'i) heritage. Te Putanga Toi Arts Access Awards
The Te Putanga Toi Arts Access Awards, formerly called the Big 'A' Awards, are New Zealand arts awards, presented annually by Arts Access Aotearoa. Introduced in 2007, they were initially called the Big 'A' Awards, but were renamed as Te Putanga Toi Arts Access Awards in 2018. The awards recognise the contribution of individuals and organisations in providing access to the arts, and celebrate the achievements of artists with lived experience of disability or mental ill-health. There are currently seven awards, including a Community Partnership award, a Museum award, two Arts in Corrections awards, the Arts Access Artistic Achievement Award for artists with a disability or lived experience of mental ill-health, and an Arts Access Accolade, presented to someone who has made a significant contribution to accessibility. Sarah Foster-Sproull
Sarah Foster-Sproull is a New Zealand choreographer, dancer and senior lecturer in dance studies at the University of Auckland. Early life and education Foster-Sproull was born in Dunedin and attended Otago Girl's High School. She began dancing at age 6 being taught by Robyn Sinclair at the Dunedin School of Ballet. She went on to attend the New Zealand School of Dance and in 2017 gained a Masters in Dance Studies from the University of Auckland. Her masters thesis was entitled ''Embodied economies: Locating the ‘prosumer-dancer’ within dancers’ experiences of choreographic practice''. BodyCartography Project
BodyCartography Project is a dance performance duo composed of Olive Bieringa and Otto Ramstad. Their work is influenced by their studies at the Body-Mind Center, where dance is taught based on a somatic movement approach. The pair have created over 150 dance works, including site-specific creations, stage productions, film, and installations. Pelenakeke Brown is a multi-disciplinary New Zealand artist. In 2019 she was awarded the Disability Dance Artistry Award by ''Dance/NYC'', and was recognised for her work through Creative NZ's Arts Pasifika Awards with the Pacific Toa award in 2020. Career Brown was 9 years old when she became a founding member and company dancer for Touch Compass. Her involvement lasted from 1997 to 2000, when she left to focus on her schooling. After secondary school, Brown studied at the University of Auckland (2007–2010), completing a bachelor of arts in Pacific studies and English literature.
