Rational Youth was a Canadian new wave Synth-pop band that was originally active between 1981 and 1986, and at various points up until the end of 2021. History Rational Youth was formed in 1981 in Montreal, Quebec, by synthesizer players Tracy Howe and Bill Vorn, both of whom idolized the German synthpop pioneers Kraftwerk. Synth-pop (short for synthesizer pop; also called techno-pop; ) is a subgenre of new wave music that first became prominent in the late 1970s and features the synthesizer as the dominant musical instrument. It was prefigured in the 1960s and early 1970s by the use of synthesizers in progressive rock, electronic, art rock, disco, and particularly the Krautrock of bands like Kraftwerk. It arose as a distinct genre in Japan and the United Kingdom in the post-punk era as part of the new wave movement of the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. Electronic musical synthesizers that could be used practically in a recording studio became available in the mid-1960s, and the mid-1970s saw the rise of electronic art musicians. After the breakthrough of Gary Numan in the UK Singles Chart in 1979, large numbers of artists began to enjoy success with a synthesizer-based sound in the early 1980s. The CD booklet contains a discography, a band biography written by vocalist and band mastermind Tracy Howe Tracy Howe (born 16 February 1952) is a Canadian musician, singer and songwriter with the band Rational Youth, and previously The Normals and Heaven Seventeen. Howe has been a member of Rational Youth from 1981 to 1986 and 1997 to 2002 and 2009 ..., and Howe's comments to each track. As a result, Howe, whose e-mail address was also printed, received hundreds of mails from fans; positive feedback which ultimately led to the reunion of Howe and co-founder Bill Vorn. ''Cold War Night Life'' is the 1982 debut album by Rational Youth Rational Youth was a Canadian new wave Synth-pop band that was originally active between 1981 and 1986, and at various points up until the end of 2021. Long out of print, it was re-released by EMI on CD in 1997 after an e-mail campaign by fans. It was subsequently re-released by Universal Music in 2019. The online magazine and record label, Cold War Night Life, was named after the album. In 2017, it released a tribute album, ''Heresy'', that featured a number of tracks from ''Cold War Night Life'' performed by electronic artists from Canada, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Norway and the UK.
