San Francesco, Tortorici
San Francesco is a Roman Catholic church and convent located in the town of Tortorici, province of Messina, region of Sicily, Italy. The church was named a national monument. It stands diagonally across from the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta. History The church was rebuilt in 1602 at this site by the Franciscan order of Frati Minori. A prior church called Santa Maria extra moenia (outside the walls) had been destroyed by a recent flood. Materials for the present church were re-used from the prior church, including the facade central portal. This was sculpted in 1432 by Gaspar de Ismiriglia. Over the doorway is the Franciscan symbol of the crossed arms. The lateral facade portals date to 1686. The portal leading to the gardens, formerly the monastic cloister, dates from the Norman era, was also derived from the destroyed church. The Metropolitan City of Messina ( it, Città metropolitana di Messina) is a metropolitan city in Sicily, Italy. Its capital is the city of Messina. It replaced the Province of Messina and comprises the city of Messina and other 107 municipalities (''comuni''). Adriana Faranda
Adriana Faranda (born 7 August 1950) is an Italian former terrorist, who was a member of the Red Brigades during the kidnapping of Aldo Moro. Biography Faranda was born at Tortorici, in eastern Sicily. Initially a member of Potere Operaio, in 1973, together with other future members of the Red Brigades (or BR) such as Bruno Seghetti and Valerio Morucci, she founded the extremist group LAP (''Lotta Armata Potere Proletario'', meaning "Armed Struggle - Proletarian Power"). Later she was part of the Roman "column" of the BR, and became a member of national council of the Red Brigades. In 1978 she took part in the kidnapping of former prime minister Aldo Moro. According to her declarations during the ensuing trial, she was, along with Morucci, against the execution of the politician; when the latter was killed, Faranda abandoned the BR, after which she entered other formations connected to far-left leader Franco Piperno. Bronte, Sicily
__NOTOC__ Bronte ( aae, Brontë) is a town and comune in the Metropolitan City of Catania, in Sicily, southern Italy. The town is situated approximately west-northwest from Mount Etna, on the side of the valley of the Simeto river, and about west from Giarre and Sicily's eastern coast. Bronte's economy relies mostly on farming, particularly of pistachio nuts. The town was settled and historically inhabited by the Arbëreshë community. History Bronte's name derives from that of one of the Cyclopes in Greek mythology and it means "The Thunderer". Legend has it that the Cyclopes lived under Mount Etna. Nebrodi
The Nebrodi ( scn, Munti Nèbbrudi; it, Monti Nebrodi, ; la, Nebrōdēs montēs) is a mountain range that runs along the north east of Sicily. Together with the Madonie and the Peloritani, they form the Sicilian Apennines. The mountains run from the Peloritani on the eastern part of the island to the foothill of the Madonie mountains to the west, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea on the north. Mount Etna, from which it is separated by the rivers Alcantara and Simeto, forms the range's southern border. Several of the peaks are above 1500 meters with the highest being the Monte Soro (1,847 m) and the Serra del Re (1,754 m).
