Torslanda
Torslanda is an urban district situated in Gothenburg Municipality, Västra Götaland County, Sweden. It had 10,129 inhabitants in 2005. Etymology A Norse pagan place of sacrifice to the God Thor was once located here, which gave rise to the name Torslanda; meaning "Thor's land". The Volvo Torslanda Plant Volvo Cars operates one of its largest automobile plants, Torslandaverken in Torslanda, under the motto "Increased capacity – for ever-higher quality". It opened in 1964 and some models produced at the plant have carried the Torslanda name, including later versions of the Volvo 240 during the early 1990s. It also holds the headquarters for Volvo Car Corporation and AB Volvo. Torslanda Airport
Torslanda Airport — (Swedish: ''Torslanda Flygplats'' or ''Torslanda Flygfält'') served the city of Gothenburg, Sweden, as its main airport from 1923 to 1977, when the Göteborg Landvetter Airport was opened. The airport closed soon afterwards. Facilities In 1969, an air traffic control tower was built on an adjacent hilltop as replacement for an older tower built in 1938. The same year a new terminal building () was built next to the old one from 1938 (). There were three runways, reduced to two after 1966 when those were extended. There were only limited taxiways, so aircraft needed to taxi along runways and to turn around at end of runway. The Torslanda Works (or ''Torslandaverken'' in Swedish), is one of the largest production facilities of Volvo Cars and is located in Torslanda on the island of Hisingen, about 12 km north west of Gothenburg city centre. The plant turned 50 on April 24, 2014. under the motto "Increased capacity – for ever-higher quality." History Success and expansion in the latter 1950s led management to begin planning for the Torslanda Plant in 1959 in a rural area that had been intended by city planners as a future industrial use. As well, infrastructure had already been in place, the port and the open sea were nearby, and the city of Göteborg’s airport was also located in Torslanda. Torslanda IK
Torslanda IK is a local sports club in Torslanda, Gothenburg, Sweden. History Torslanda IK was founded in 1944 by Anders Tullock, Bengt Tullock and Erik Danielsson. In the 1950s the sports club created sections for football, table tennis, handball, and hockey. In the 1960s gymnastics and in 1972 bowling were added. The men's A football team won Division VI titles in 1981 and 1985. The men's A team advanced to Division IV in 1987, winning that title in 1996. The club's original clubhouse was built in 1979 at Torslandavallen but was destroyed by fire in 1992. A replacement clubhouse was inaugurated in March 1994. Torslanda Church
The Torslanda Church (Swedish: ''Torslanda kyrka'') is a medieval church in Gothenburg, Sweden. It is located on the island of Hisingen, in the Torslanda borough, and it belongs to the parish of Torslanda-Björlanda in the Diocese of Gothenburg. Building It is one of the oldest churches on Hisingen and in the whole city, as the oldest part of the building, the nave is estimated to have been erected in the 12th century. The porch was added in 1766; the choir in 1780 and the sacristy in 1806. Interior Some of the interiors of the church is also notable. There are two baptismal fonts - one made of stone, dating back to the 13th century, and a wooden one from the 16th century. The wooden pulpit was built in 1627. There is also a crucifix hanging above the entrance to the choir, made in the late 15th century and renovated in 1896. The 15th century altarpiece depicts God surrounded by the Twelve Apostles. Elizabeth "Long Liz" Stride ( Gustafsdotter; 27 November 1843 – 30 September 1888) is believed to have been the third victim of the unidentified serial killer known as Jack the Ripper, who killed and mutilated at least five women in the Whitechapel and Spitalfields districts of London from late August to early November 1888. Unlike the other four canonical Ripper victims, Stride had not been mutilated following her murder, leading some historians to suspect Stride had not actually been murdered by Jack the Ripper. However, Stride's murder occurred less than one hour before the murder of the Ripper's fourth canonical victim, Catherine Eddowes, within walking distance, and her act of murder is suspected to have been disturbed by an individual entering the crime scene upon a two-wheeled cart. Volvo 200
The Volvo 200 Series (or 240 and 260 Series) is a range of mid-size cars produced by Swedish company Volvo Cars from 1974 until 1993, with more than 2.8 million total units sold worldwide. Like the Volvo 140 Series (1966 to 1974), from which it was developed, it was designed by Jan Wilsgaard. The series overlapped production of the Volvo 700 Series (1982 to 1992). As the 240 Series remained popular, only the 260 Series was displaced by the 700 Series, which Volvo marketed alongside the 240 for another decade. Gothenburg Municipality (''Göteborgs kommun'' or ''Göteborgs stad'') is a municipality in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden. Its seat is located in the city of Gothenburg. When the first Swedish local government acts were implemented in 1863 the City of Gothenburg, founded and chartered in 1621, became a city municipality with an elected city council (''stadsfullmäktige''). Gothenburg Municipality (''Göteborgs kommun''), Sweden is subdivided into 10 ''stadsdelsnämndsområden'' (roughly "city district committee areas"). The term is often translated to ''borough''. But they are really not boroughs, as they are not legal entities or juristic persons of their own, but organs of the central municipal administration. The members of the committees are appointed by the ''kommunfullmäktige'' (municipal assembly) and not by the electorates of the respective "boroughs". Hisingen
Hisingen () is the fifth-largest island of Sweden (after Gotland, Öland, Södertörn and Orust), with an area of . It is a river island, formed by the split of the Göta Älv at Bohus, and is defined to the east and south by the main arm of that river, to the north by the smaller arm (known as the Nordre Älv), and to the west by the Kattegat. Göteborg Landvetter Airport () is an international airport serving the Gothenburg (Swedish: ''Göteborg'') region in Sweden. With just over 6.8 million passengers in 2018 it is Sweden's second-largest airport after Stockholm–Arlanda. Landvetter is also an important freight airport.
